Subject: Should the check engine light go out? IP: Logged
Message: I just had my 2001 Dakota into the dealer for the check engine light and they determined it was for the gas cap having a bad seal. I also had checked the code myself before taking it in and saw it show the say. They put a new cap on it but didn't reset the light? I checked the code myself and its the same one still.
Should I expect the light to go out on it's own after a few days? How long should I wait before deciding something else must be going on? Is there a way to force it to reset? If so, is it a bad idea to force it?

Message: It should have went out immediately. You could disconnect the battery to reset it, or take it back to the dealer and make them reset it.

Message: It takes a few cycles to go off on its own. Mine took a few days to go off. same problem.

Message: I did the battery thing and it went out. Granted, my radio is completely reset but thats easy enough to fix. I just want to see that it does come back on right away!
