Subject: O2 sensor question IP: Logged
Message: Can an oxygen sensor be bad even if it's not throwing codes? Don't the sensors only show a code when they're stuck (not just lazy)? I'm getting worse mileage and I failed smog on high HC (91 Dakota 3.9 V6) and I was considering an O2 sensor change (as well as the work I've already done - new ignition system etc.). Could a 'lazy' sensor be my problem? Am I barking up the right tree in anyone's opinion?

Message: I think O2 sensors either work or they don't. You will get codes:
21 oxygen sensor circuit
51 oxygen sensor stuck at lean position
52 oxygen sensor stuck at rich position
if it is not working. It sounds like your catalytic converter is going on you. Go to a muffler shop and they will be able to tell you for sure what shape it is in.

Message: LOTS of things cause high HC. Did you recently do a FULL tuneup and oil change? Are you getting any fault codes? Is gas mileage lower than normal?

Message: It's got new coil, cap/rotor, wires/plugs, clean throttle body, new air filter, new oil/filter and clean EGR passages with a working valve. The only codes I'm getting are unrelated to the problem (12, 41).
Oddly enough, it was after doing this work that I noticed the worsened mileage. Other than the lowered mileage, however, the truck is running better than ever.

Message: You say your EGR is working !
But , how old is it ?
O2 may be problem - getting lazy .
But , EGR " solenoid sensor " may also be ' lazy '
How is compression on all cylinders ?

Message: With a compression tester. 8)
Warm engine fully, take all spark plugs out, block throttle opne, unplug primary coil connection, screw gauge into a cylinder, and crank 3-5 times. Note each reading.
