Message: My 97' dakota 4X4 3.9L is making a rattling sound when I get to 40Kms or faster. It's coming from underneath the truck. If you have any Ideas as to what it could be I would appreciate your input. THX.

Message: Agreed, I heard a wierd noise under my truck and my cat was handing there almost ready to fall off. I tried to weld it back on but every time I sparked the welder up the d@mn thing would start scratching the he11 out of me. Discouraged, I finally wound up driving around until I heard a loud thump, guess the cat tired out and lost it's grip. It's for the best anyway, my wife likes my new cat better, it's not as noisy and doesn't stink as mucch as the old one did ;)

Message: LOL!!!!
Seriously though, based on my very limited knowledge of how these things work, could be the cat(alytic converter).
Reach under your truck and give the cat a good whack with your hand. Just don't do this right after you've been driving the truck, you'll burn the heck out of your hand. It should not rattle when you do this. If it does rattle, it means something (whatevers supposed to be in there and not rattling- I think ceramic chambers) is loose. This could be causing the rattling sound you heard at certain rpms. Broke cat will also cause loss of mpgs.
Not sure of the warranty on the cat. I think that its 8 years/ 80,0000 miles.

Message: 89dak, maybe body or bed mount bushings could be worn out. check all the points where the bed and body are mounted to the frame, and check the upper control arm bushings and front eye of the leaf springs, those are another thought.... any signs of cracking or tears is a sign they are in need of replacement.....
BTW DOG< that really was funny as heII.. I had to post that at the shop I work at....
