Subject: Changing Tire help needed(newbie) IP: Logged
Message: I got the hubcaps off and I can see the lug nuts and the (forgive me) screws(?) that the lug nuts go on.......but some of those screws are hiddiously rusted, and one of them has NO threads at all the last 3/4 to 1/2 inch. (to the outside)
Obviously I should replace that but the question is, how? Are those screws easily replaced? If so, what are the specs on those? I can't seem to find any specs for them in the Haynes Manual.
And HECK NO, I'm not letting some local tire place do it. I have a feeling they are the ones who stripped the screw anyway. Also, what are the specs on the lug nuts? Figure I might as well replace them too while I'm at it. (at least some of them) THanks, and please help me.

Message: The screws you are talking about are called the "lugs". The nuts are the "lug nuts".
Rust is common here, especially if you live in snow country, or near the ocean. A little rust is not bad, but a lot can weaken the lugs and cause them to break.
You say the threads are missing on some of them. That's usually caused by some schmuck with an air gun. Unfortunatly, they need to be replaced. It's not a job for the weak of heart. It's an interferance fit. So you need a good press to get the old ones out and the new ones in. I've tried it before, and without a press it just doesn't work well. Don't go attacking it with a BFH, you'll end up bending something, and that gets expensive.
You usually buy the lugs and lug nuts seperate. I believe they are 1/2". But go to the parts store or dealership and have them look up the right parts.
In the future, always spray a little WD-40 on the lugs before putting the wheel back on. That will protect them and prevent rust in the future. If you live in salt country, consider a little anti-seize lube on the lugs and lug nut shoulders, where it contacts the wheel.

They are called "Lug Studs" or "studs."
I worked at Discount Tire for 5 years. Let a pro replace the studs.
DO NOT put anti-seize or WD-40 on the lug nut shoulder. This is where the nut needs friction against the wheel to KEEP IT ON THE TRUCK. Just imagine coating your feet in crisco before putting on sandals.

Message: it is quite obvious that you are NOT one of the pros that I would have work on my truck! you see, the thing is, anti seize is NOT a lubricant but a material that keeps the nuts, lugs and wheels from galling and binding and rusting together. I agree with you 100% about the WD 40, but since you appearantly have no knowledge of what an anti seize compound does your comments on it are entirely suspect.
