Subject: differential check-up plz! IP: Logged
Message: changed my rear abs speed sensor (the one in the differential) and have a concern regarding the old sensor.
first off, I had my diff fluid changed within the past year sometime, but had a shop do it. So I have no clue what it should look like or smell like.
When I took out the old sensor, the fluid (at least the fluid on the sensor itself) was a dark black. It also smelled really bad.
And there were a bunch of metal bits stuck to the sensor magnet.
Is there anything out of the ordinary here? Anything to be concerned about?
thanks!

Message: I would be concerned. The flouid will be black after a short time, but it shouldn't smell bad. I would change the fluid again, and use a quality synthetic of the correct viscosity. I used Mobile 1.
Those metal bits are normal - to a point. You don't say how many miles are on it. If you have more than 40-50K, I'de say that's normal.

Message: The awful smell is most likely just the gear lube it has a noticeably different smell to it.
