 Subject: 93 dakota fuel gauge doesnt work

I saw on ebay a guy selling a 2gen dakota and said the gas gauge doesnt work.The guy also said this was a problem with the dakota is this true and if it is what do i have to do to fix the problem pulling the gas tank down and than what?as i have the same problem from my dakota that i brought used.

Sounds like the fuel sender unit in the tank went
bad. It's a do-able project for the weekend
fixer-uper. Just use as much fuel as you can from
the tank before you begin the job.
Two ways to do the job. Remove gas tank or bed.

Get your pump from www.rockauto.com. Best place for parts I have found. I think the Carter pump runs around $150 or so.

You might. The sending unit is integrated into the fuel pump. In order to replace one you need to do the whole unit. The only thing I can think of that you could try is splicing the grounds on the pump. The pump has a seperate ground from the sending unit. Many people have reported bad grounds on the sending unit that can eventually cause it to fail. If you splice the sending unit ground to the pump ground, you get a better connection. If your unit is not working due to the ground, this would get it working again. Otherwise I think the pump is your only other option.

You don't need a new fuel pump! I just replaced the fuel gage sending unit. On my '94, two bolts drop the tank, unclip the wires from the tank, unclip the fuel lines, pull the tank out, unscrew the ring holding the sending unit in, pull the hole sending unit out, and replace the fuel gage sending unit. It is just two bolts and three wires and it is off the rest off the sending unit. Might as well replace the fuel strainer at the bottom of the sending unit while it is apart and a new seal for the sending unit at the top of the tank to it may not need it but better be safe and get one. Or you can try some fuel injector cleaner and dump it in the tank someone said it will get the gage working for awile it might clean the buildup off the fuel gage sending unit a little. Good luck I don't now what Sneezer and ? are talking about but maybe they are thinking of a gen I or III fuel system.

checked every fuse an i even hit my gas tank with a hammer
to see if the damn thing was stuck. nothin worked help

this was dealt with back in '02 - '04, discussing the incandescent drls and the Canadian & U.S. laws.
But, hey!! it's 2013 and there are lots of LED DRLs on the web. It wouldn't really be that big a project to build a new circuit, with a switch an led status light and a set of the new DRLs. Just to be different, I'd like to have mine come on with the ignition but with the headlights off and to turn off when the headlights are on.
I'm thinking a relay in series with the DRLs, that does not flow current when the headlights are on, but allows power to the DRLs when the headlights are off. +12 volts from the accessory bus and maybe a transistor instead of the relay.
thoughts, anyone??

I have a 94 dakota my fuel gauge stays on e till I have a half
a tank then it works fine any ideas what could be wrong
with this

Its either a bad gauge or sending unit. The same thing happened to me. Use the trip odometer to figure out how much gas you have left. You shouldn't even let it go under 1/4 tank anyway to save your fuel pump.

I had a problem with my 95 Dakota gas gauge. At
first I thought it was the tank sensor but
after changing it, no difference. I took apart
the dash and could find nothing wrong. I found
some loose grounds and that still didn't fix
the problem. So I began to look for electrical
problems in the wires. On the 95 Dakota, the
brake light has a middle brake light in the
tail gate. That electrical connection over time
would get caught between the body and the tail
gate and crack the outer casing so that the
connection became exposed. Every time that I
would press the brakes the connection would
begin to get hot and melt the wires in the
harness that goes to the brake lights. Those
wires run through the same harness as the gas
gauge. Over time the wires began to melt the
coating on all the wires in the harness. So
sometime the gas gauge would work and some
times not. I found the problem right where the
wires for the gas tank leave the harness and
head toward the gas tank. I disconnected the
rear middle brake light, and then I repaired
the wires in the harness and now my gas gauge
works fine. Don't know if this is your problem
but it's worth a look.

while filling the tank the gauge rises to half a tank after it reaches the half full mark it drops to empty when full. after I run the gas to half a tank it rises to half full . never saw this problem before , any sugestions ?
