Subject: Questions about Tires & Rims IP: Logged
Message: I drive a 2000 4-Door Quad Cab Sport.
I know i could fit 20" rims, but is it possible to fit 22's without doing any kind of modifications?
Now to the tires....I'm pretty dumb when it comes to automobiles, so please try to put this simple.
What in gods name does this mean "285/50R20"
Thats a size of a tire. I'm lost.

Message: Yes 22" rims will fit in the correct size bolt pattern and correct size tires. The tires shoud be approx. the same overall diameter as the stock ones.
Play with the sizes:

Message: PYE, check out the term "Plus sizing"
it means you keep the outer diameter of the wheel/tire the same but increase the rim size.
you can go up to a 32 inch outer diameter with minor rubbing. (you will have to trim a little)
You will have to be careful about the "offset" you choose because it will change the position of the wheel in the wheel well. (tucked or pushed out.)
My suggestion would be to call a good tire shop locally and tell them what you have and what you want. Tell them price is no object you just want to make sure you know all of your options.
They will be more than happy to take time with you and select the best fit. then you can compare prices online. ( give them the chance to compete on the price.) they may through in lifetime warenty on tire. If there price is fair spend the locally.

Message: Let me give you an example of what the others are talking about. My Dak has 15" wheels with a 235/65-15 tire. The outside tire diameter is about 29". I am puting 18s on it so in order to keep the same outside tire diameter I need to put on 255/55-18 tires. Basically the rim gets bigger so the tire side wall has to get shorter to keep the same ouside diameter. If you keep the same diameter the clearance between the fender and the tire will remain the same...no rubbing, and it doesn't mess with you speedo.
Clear as mud right?

Message: For your example of 285-50R20 - 285 is the width of the tire in mm., 50 is the aspect ratio (height of tire compared to width), R indicates radial, and 20 is rim size. Thats the general idea anyway, but tires seldom measure out exactly the same as the numbers. Even with inch sizing, like 31 x10.5 x 15, the tires aren't usually a full 31" tall or 10.5" wide.

Message: I understand now. LOL, I'm not too good on car stuff so thanks for bearing with me.
If I were to get the 22's, the tire would have to be extreamly thin, which costs alot more from what I have been seeing.
Thanks again, especially to Jaggy because I called a few shops saying money wasnt an object blah blah blah and they told me to come up and they would give me a free fitment and all that.
THANKS
