Subject: Transmission Whine?? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1998 V6 Dakota Sport. I have noticed a "whine" coming from the manual transmission. Thought that it might be clutch related and since the original had 65,000 on it I decided to change the clutch and pilot bearing. But...(why is there always a but)...the whine continues. It is more noticable in 1st - 3rd gear and seems to be less or non existent in 4th and 5th. When the clutch is pushed in the noise goes away. Once the clutch is left out.."there it is"!!! Can anyone please shed some light on this? Is this a sign of my transmission going or what? Thanks in advance!

Message: T/O bearing and pressure plate also replaced. Drained/flushed/replaced trans juice and gave the rear diff. a fill up also. Seems like the noise is coming from the front of the trans. and not the rear of the truck. Almost like the sound (but louder) than when you have a bad ground on an amp on your stereo and you get the whine when you hit the gas...similar to that.

Message: Is this a new thing with your truck? I have a 1988 Dak 4x4 and my truck has been making that sound since I can remember having it. I still have the original clutch and other components in my truck. I thought this is just the noise this type of tranny made.

Message: SPT...I never noticed it this much before. Maybe I am being paranoid but not sure. And since I never really noticed it before I'm not completely sure. But it just doesn't seem like it should be makeing this much noise in the low gears. I did some mods (chip x2, dual exhaust, headers, cold air intake, throttle body, etc..etc..) and that is when I started noticing it. Well after a few quality burns of the ol' rear tires, followed by some...ummm..."road tests vs. mercedes" (DAKOTA WINS AGAIN!!) that is!! Just afraid that I jumped on it a little too much, too often and torqued something out of wack! Just wanted to get it fixed before it "snowballed" into something bigger and more expensive. If I turn my stereo up...I don't hear the whine anymore!! Haha!

Message: Hey Kevin let me know if you find anything. Like I was saying I have a 1988 Dak 4x4 with 297,000 km(185,000 miles) on it. I have done no mods to it, everything is factory and the truck has had a tranny whine like yours since I can remeber having the truck. My Dad bought it new and I got it off him. I do not do burnout's or race the truck but I do off road a bit.
