Message: Hi everyone this is my first post on these forums.
I posted a similar question last week on moparchat so maybe
some of you have seen this before, please bear with.
My friends father whom I regard as an intelligent but one sided
individual was telling me and a few other people about his
engineer neighbor that say's that you should never ever change
your tranny fluid or filter. I didn't ask what kind of engineer, you
know the reaction I would get from a tunnel visioned person, we
all know people like this.
Of course he tells a story from ten years ago whwn he had the
tranny fluid and filter changed and three weeks later he has to
get a new transmission installed. So of course he thinks this guy
is right because of the freak timing and alignment of the planets
ten years ago for this to happen.
The nutty thing is that I received a Mopar coupon mailer from
the factory that had my dealers name printed in the blank boxes.
You know the kinda thing I'm talking about has slick pictures
and descriptions of the different services advertised. So anyhow
the description for the tranny service is this "Includes:New
Mopar transmission filter-Recycle fluid, replenish aditives-
necesarry adjustments...). What does the recycle fluid mean, I
don't think that it means that the dealer recycles the fluid like
they do oil. If it meant that it would say refill with fluid or
something.
Does this mean anything or not? Does anyone know about this?
Thanks Greg

I do NOT believe anyone is recycling
tranny fluid..
If it needs it or is " due for it "
Get it changed = just make sure is Chryco fluid
or AMSOIL synthetic..

Message: Yes, they do recycle it, because it is oil, and they're saying the cost of doing it is embedded in the price and not an extra fee (like shop fees, or hazardous disposal fees).
However, if they say "replenish additives" along with recycling, I'd be scared that this does mean that they're reusing it with new additives. DON'T let them do that.
I am an engineer and work with engineers who start up their cars and IMMEDIATELY throw it in gear and race off, in the coldest weather. Don't take it as gospel because an engineer does or says it. Fluid and filter changes should be done by the book. In the long-ago, you could run an A904 forever with original fill, but those days are gone with today's cheapo trannies. If it fails right after servicing, either they really f***ed up something or it was random, unrelated.

Message: It was true that back in the days of the 727 (I think) and the 904 transmissions that the factory manual said NOT to change the tranny fluid. But if you had to change it (rebuild or whatever) that you would need to change it on a regular basis thereafter.
Didn't make sense to me but I never ever had a problem with either torqueflight tranny.

Message: Thanks everybody,
I've got 28000 miles on my truck and have been thinking
that I should change the fluid and filters for the last few
weeks. I've got the transmission with two 2nd gears, I
think it's the 45re, or something like that. I have a 2003
club cab 2wd does anyone know of any pitfalls in the
process for this combination? What about amsoil synthetic
fluid, is it really that good or is there another full synthetic
that's just as good or better thats easier to get? I have a
friend that has been involved in circle track racing on the
dirt tracks his entire life that hates their oil but say's that
the tranny fluid is great. I would appreciate any thoughts
that anyone has.
Thanks Greg

Message: Use either ATF+4 or Amsoil ATF (the Amsoil I've heard is better cuz it's FULLY synthetic and the ATF+4 isn't I guess...I can't confirm that though). Those are supposedly the only two fluids you should run in the automatic trannys.

Message: The only reason I would use ATF+4 would be to keep the DC warranty completely intact or if Amsoil ATF wasn't available.
I have been using Amsoil AFT in my 45RFE tranny for about 40-50K with a mix of highway, city and towing and it has performed great. Tranny never missed a beat and the fluid looks great even after towing for about 3-4K.
