Subject: shifter knob IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 Dakota Sport w/auto.
So, that means I have the shifter that comes out of the steering column. Problem. There is a knob there with a button control for OverDrive. Well, that knob was already busted a little bit from the previous owner (recently bought that). But, my sister recently drove it and she finished the job.
Has anyone ever had this type of problem before? Any clues on how much to fix it or completely replace it? Because it also seems as if the wires leading to the button have been pinched, as the actual knob is very touchy and OD turns off and on with the slightest touch.
Is it best to go to a dealer for this, or is that the only place that can fix it? I have a Chrysler dealer right down the road, but I am just curious as to what kind of cost it might be.

Message: With parts like these they may only be available form the dealer and it would be cheaper to just do the work yourself unless you are not comfortable with doing wiring work. Sounds like you need to replace the button and the knob. I haven't looked it up in the FSM but I'm thinking that button just pops loose from the knob a little bit and the handle part unscrews from the shifter stalk.
