Subject: 4x4 chatter IP: Logged
Message: Hello, i have a 2003 4x4 and have a few questions. Is it bad to take sharp turns (like a three point turn) in four wheel drive? When i do a slow 180 in reverse i can hear my tires chatter like i have lockers in the front and rear. Is this normal?

Message: Yep...great way to break parts. The type of four wheel drive systemsm in our Daks is for limited traction conditions like mud, snow, etc. There isn't anything to allow for the different wheel speeds from the front to back diffs like in a All Wheel Drive system. The problem is aggravated if your truck has posi units. Best keep it in 2wd in dry conditions.

Message: Thanks for the info. Don't worry this is something i have only done a couple. The first was when i unknowingly knock the switch into 4wd. Thans for your help.

Message: That's why AWD is worth the money. Great traction all the time on any surface. I've only used 4x4 in deep mud or very steep climbs twice. AWD is better in snow anyway for road conditions.
