Subject: What Oil Should I use??
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi, I would like any reccomendations on what type of oil I should use in my 00 4.7 Dak w/47k Mi. I have used Mobile 1 10w-30 since 3k Mi. Now with the miles getting up there along with the real hot summers around here should I go up to 10w-40. also can I safely go back down to 10w-30 in the winters months with no potential problems. Thanks for any advice guys!

What Oil Should I use? Amsoil or Amzoil

You are correct with your decision. It is perfectly fine to use a slightly heavier wt. oil in the Summer and a lighter weight oil in the Winter.

A better answer, and talk of viscosity, when deciding your oil weight.

The first number, preceding the "w" (for Winter), is an oil’s viscosity grade, is an indication of low-temperature performance -- the lower the better. The lower winter viscosity grades will be more valuable in colder climates. 10w- generally flows and pumps fine at four degrees below zero on the Fahrenheit scale, and each grade below that buys you another nine degrees.

For the record --- Synthetic oil is vastly superior to conventional oil in its low-temperature pumpability, high-temperature stability, long-drain capability, and high lubricity (low friction).

The second number represents the oil’s high-temperature viscosity, but higher is not always better! One wants to choose the minimum viscosity that results in an oil film thick enough to prevent wear at the temperatures one expects to encounter. Only the engineers that designed the engine know what viscosity is required to provide adequate film thickness without unnecessary friction, so you should certainly try to remain within manufacturers guidelines.

Caution

It is almost certain that higher viscosity oils, such as Xw-40 and Xw-50, are complete wastes of energy, placing undue strain on your engine, and raising operating temperatures for no real benefit.

What Oil Should I use??

I have a 01 Dakota R/T 5.9 liter with 45,000 miles on it. I've been a proud user of Amsoil's 0-30W Full Synthetic oil. Spins the engine over at ease at every start up and no known engine ticking noise. I've used this oil year round since I had 7,000 miles on my truck. This oil is the bomb. I've gone the extended oil drain interval of 18,000 miles on my truck and the dipstick has been on the full mark the whole time. I did have to change the filter at the 12,500 mark and add one quart of Amsoil. Your Amsoil filter collects sizes of 5 microns versus any other oil filters(such as at your auto part stores)that only collect an average size of 20 microns. Amsoil full synthetic oil has a higher flash point than conventional oil. That means it resists the breakdown and keeps the oil stabile longer. I believe it has a 100 degree higher flash point than conventional oil. Amsoil's 0-30W is engineered to last at least 35,000 miles before you need to worry about changing. The key is to replace the filter at the 12,500 mile mark to keep the filtered oil flowing it's best. You can't go wrong using Amsoil. I've got plenty of positive stories using Amsoil. Nothing beats it, that I've ever seen.

There's a ton of information on this board and others about dino vs. synthetic, Amsoil vs. Mobile 1, and what weight to use. If you do a search, you'll find a few hours worth of interesting reading.

But here's a few points I consider important (FWTW):

1. Pick the lowest viscosity oil that will maintain proper oil pressure. In modern engines, 5W-30 is usually about right, even after many miles.

2. Synthetic is better than dino.

3. Amsoil and Mobile 1 are the best. Both have pluses and minuses. Pick one and be consistant.

4. Changing oil every 3,000 miles does nothing for your engine.

All of these points have been discussed at length in the recent past. As you read through your search, keeps these points in mind.

Alot of Great Info guys! I have searched these forums and I just dont have a clear Idea of The right answer is. 1st things 1st, I have no doubt Synthetic is better than Dino oil. Also I do change my oil at 3k Mi. Im just worried that If I switch up to 10w-40 The engine Will require that from then on. I have read some things on engine tolerance and how the engine may require you to keep running a thicker oil. I do have another question for you AmsoilSponsor. Im getting The Universal Atf for My auto, would you happen to know how many quarts I need. Thanks Guys!

Driftwood Dak,

I'm sorry you have chosen to be close minded on not knowing what oil to use. Even conventional oil your wasting your money on 3,000 mile oil changes. You should be able to go twice that far on regular oil. It has been proven by Consumer Reports. Switching from 5-30W to 10-40W is not going to do damage to your engine. Maybe you shouldn't be driving if you believe your engine may require you to keep running thicker oil. Your ATF Tranny fluid will be around 10-12 quarts to change fluids. As the saying goes.........You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink.!! I hope someday you'll listen to us, instead of being so close mind. Have a great day and be sure to stop driving soon.
