Subject: '91 318 4 WD O/D problem IP: Logged
Message: Well, to start off I thought I got a great deal on a 1991 318 4WD Dakota with a newly rebuilt tranny--and all was fine until my dumba$s went to Dodge's website and punched in the VIN to check for recalls and such and sure enough, there was one for the manual valve which needed replacing (potential problem for the vehicle to shift into neutral when parked and just roll away, I guess)--anyways, after the service was performed at a SoCal High Desert dealership, I immediately lost O/D....returned it to the dealer and the next day it was "fixed", the culprit was a wiring harness that apparently had been "repaired by somebody else" before, and was temporarily fixed. Two days later I happen to lose O/D and my speedometer at what seems like is the same instant--so I search and search and see that the speedo cable going into the case is loose, and I mean hanging out of it--and after loosening a guard plate underneath it, I learn that the nut which secures the cable to the case is stripped out--I temporarily secure it as best as can be, and take it for a quick test (this is Sat night of course), and O/D and my speedometer return immediately....my question is, although there is some type of solenoid or sensor or something electrical next to the cable where it plugs into the case, is this a likley cause for O/D failing to kick in? The in cabin O/D switch and wiring are brand-spanking new.
Thanks in advance...

Message: The part you are referring to is the VSS. Vehicle speed sensor. Yes it controls the OD shift. The dealer left the connection off after they did the valve change on my Dakota. I drove right back and the mechanic went underneath and hooked up the sensor. Easy fix.

Message: The PCM uses this sensor to determine at what speed to engage overdrive (as well as other inputs), but without it, no overdrive.

Message: Thanks--I sure wish the nut which secures the cable to the case was not completely stripped out--it's be nice to replace just that part, without having to do the entire cable ass'y replacement...

Message: *sigh*
The nut that I need to replace comes as part of a VSS assembly--the dealer wants $141 list--the local boneyard doesn't have one, and I don't have a buddy that works for DC.
HELP!
