Subject: 2 wd Wheel hop IP: Logged
Message: Two weeks ago I bought a 98 2 wd v6 Dakota with 93K miles from a used car dealer. It has been in the shop the last 10 days and they are ready to buy it back because they can't find anyone to fix it. From a dead stop under quick acceleration I get 3 guick jolts in the drive train. I thought it was the transmission but they serviced the transmission and found no problems with it. They say the right rear wheel is hopping. They checked the brakes with nothing found. Tomorrow they are going to check the rear end. Should I take them up on their offer to buy it back?

Message: Wheel hop can be easily reduced by putting a clamp on the springs, or traction bars, but I would give it back in favor of the v8

Message: I doubt that it's wheel hop. Wheel hop is caused by having more torque than traction. Usually not an issue with a V6, unless you have real crappy tires. I'd be taking a close look at the differential.

Message: Some fresh gas-charged shocks might be all you need to stop the hop.
