Subject: R/T vs Sport IP: Logged
Message: I am planning on buying a 2001 Dakota soon and have had a hard time deciding between a R/T or a Sport. What is the best one for daily driving and doing very little if any towing? How well does the 3.9L V-6, 4.7L V-8, and 5.9L perfrom against each other? Also to you 4.7L owners how do they sound with aftermarker exhaust systems?

I've got a 2000 Dak Sport 3.9L. If you get that combo, make sure you get the low-gear rearend and the 5-speed if you can get it! It's a good combo. A V-8 would be nice, but... it's expensive. Both in cost to add, and gas milage from what I hear.

Message: I have a 2000 Dakota CC 4X4 with the 4.7 and 5 speed tranny, with 3.55 gears. It has a lot of power. I have a mopar cat-back for my truck, and it's sound pretty much like a 70's muscle car.

COST ALOT MORE.
I HAVE A 2001 SPORT PLUS WITH A 4.7L
5SPD 3.55 POSI REG CAB.
IT EATS R/TS
I HAVE A CAT BACK THAT MAKES IT SOUND
LIKE A 71 CHALLENGER I PUT FENDER
FLARES ON IT, CD, AND A BUNCH OF
OTHER UPGRADES AND IM STILL WELL
BELOW BUDGET FOR AN R/T. PLUS I GET
BETTER GAS MILEAGE.
16X8 INCH RIMS ARE GOOD ENOUGH FOR
ME AND GIVE A FIRM YET STABLE RIDE. DO
THE MATH, AN R/T IS FOR SUCKERS,
UNLESS YOU REALLY LIKE THOSE
STICKERS.

Message: I used to own a 2000 Regular Cab R/T before I wrapped it around a telephone pole at 95 mph. It felt dang quick stock. I did the Mopar PCM, Jacob's Pro street,Quick D intake, and Spintech Catback. It responded "decent" to the mod's and I never lost a race in it. I tore up a 4.6L Mustang and also took down a 5.0L 5 speed Mustang. The gas mileage was terrible at 9 mpg in town.My truck ran a 9.51 in the 1/8 which is around 14.8's in the 1/4. I clocked it 6.4 sec 0-60 on the G-Tech. I must say that the R/T felt faster than it really was due to the Torque. I have also drove a 2000 RC 4.7L auto with a 3.92 Posi. It didn't feel like a rocket ship like the R/T did off the line but it pulled hard all through the rpm range. That's something the R/T didn't do, even with the mod's.My dad says the 4.7L was faster than my R/T. He drove them both to. He's a good judge of cars,but I don't know.It was definitly close, although I really believe my R/T could have took the sport off the line due to the torque. I don't think even after my mod's my R/T could have kept up with some 4.7L 5 speeds with 3.92 posi. Some 4.7L 5 speeds hit 14.7 in the 1/4 STOCK. If you tow nothing much and want a fast fun truck get the 4.7L 5 speed with 3.92 posi. That's what I'm getting.R/T's are fun and powerful they just feel faster than they are.

Message: My 4.7 is very fast...I raced a 318 Dakota and beat him so bad that he got so made at me that he tried to run in to me.I called the police and they put him in jail.

Message: I beat a Mustang 5.0 5-speed once, blew him away. Of course, it probally helped that he stalled it off the line... hehe...
Not many people up here that want to race my 2000 Dak 3.9 5-speed, but hey, thats good for me. I'd rather not blow her up, know what I mean? And it gets up to highway speed/passing speed real good.

You can't go wrong with the Dakota, 3.9L, 4.7L or 5.9L.
I could afford an R/T so that's what I bought! I get so many compliments on it. White, Two Blue metallic racing stripes, bed liners, hard bed cover, nice black interior, CD/Tape/Equalizer, infinity speakers, over head console, cruise, stereo controls on the steering wheel, standard 3.92 limited slip rear, 17 inch rims, wheel flares, window tint, auto, 5.9L.
Dyno @ 224hp@4200 and 327tq@3500 at the wheels! Stock! with 4400 miles waiting for 10k to roll around for optimal performance.
The Dyno operator said I could run 14's!
No replacement for displacement.

Message: You laugh about beating a 5.0L? Uhh, my friend in a 98 RC S-10 5 speed took town a late 80's early 90's (whenever they had the box shape) at our 1/8 mile track. He turned a 10.156 and the Mustang ran a 10.327. The 5.0L I rcaed was newer and I believe was a 94 or 95 because they started with the 4.6L in 96. Which by the way I also easily killed one of those. He claimed he had trick flow heads and others mod's done to the 5.0L. I down him down 0-75 mph (Where is matters in the 1/8.) by a front bumper. He would have passed me in the 1/4, but we wasn't racing quarter. Of course the R/T falls of past 70 anyway. I loved my truck but I dont' see spending over 20 g's again for something that would get eaten up by some Sport. We also have about a thousand R/T's in town, but NO RC Sport 4.7L's, especially with the 5 speed.

Message: I have my 2001 SLT+ CC 4.7, 5 speed, 3.55 antislip 2wd for a little over a month. I'm getting 19 MPG around town and rural driving. From talking with owners of the 3.9, your going to get better fuel economy and performance with the 4.7. Spend the extra $500 if you can. I know I'm glade I did. The 5 speed's fun to drive and will save you about a grand over the automatic, more than enough to pay for the V8 and antislip rear options.
Just my experiences/thoughts.

Message: The V-6 blows in an extended cab auto trans configuration. I have to say it really pulls through first gear but when it goes into second, it really loses its guts. It feels like there is too big of a difference in gear ratios between 1st and 2nd gear. I have 3.55 rear end and might upgrade to 3.77's that i was told would work in it. 3.92 is too much for me as i do alot of hwy cruising. By the way, can the speedo be recalibrated if i change gears? Mine's a 99.

Message: The V6 Auto I drove at the dealer made nice power, of course this was a 2000 Extended, not CC. But I've noticed that the 3.9 makes it's useable power between 2750 and 4250 RPM. Unfortanetly, the shift light comes on a 2500...
Which means thats PROBALLY where the auto shifts, when not floored. I tell you, once the Tach climbs to 2750 it's like getting kicked in the butt. I've had friends grab the "Oh Sh!t" handle when we climb past 2750 ;0)
I'd like to take on a 5.0L 5-speed, just to see how I fair. I'd probally loose, unless the guy stalls it again. Worst thing was, he had his girlfriend with him (assuming she was, if not, whats her number?). Oyi... embaressment galore!

Message: I own a 2001 Dakota Sport, graduation present from parents, and so far I have had no trouble performance wise with mine. I had some trouble with a Penda Tonneou (spelling?), but other than that, that is the only thing wrong. All my after market stuff is fine. Now I just have to get the big @$$ scrape on the side of it fixed.

Message: Bought a 02 Ram about 2 mnts ago, liked it at first, but decided it was too big. It is an ST with tilt/cruise/cd 4.7L. I found a 02 dakota club cab i loved. With the same mileage. When I went in to see about trading and the difference, I figured maybe a couple grand plus my truck. They came back and said mine plus $6500?!?!?! I was like what? See ya. I didnt show it, but I really hated it cause i liked the truck.

Message: The way I see it is that if you want a good truck for work, you need something dependable, with good gas milage, that can be fun; go for a sport with a 4.7. You can get a 4x4 in case you need that, plus a 5 speed.
Or, if you want something a little more showy, with the potential to get some serious power w/ aftermarket mods, you dont care about offroad use at all, and dont mind a 13 MPG; go for an R/T
It all comes down to what you want to do with the truck. I have an R/T, and I love it, but I also have respect for the guys w/ non-R/T models. I'd agree with whoever posted above about the 3.9. You may as well get a 4.7, more power with less gas milage... how can you go wrong? Same with the 5.2, I dont see the point in getting one unless you want to put on some 5.9 mods. Anyway, hope that helps, and definatly try both, they drive completely different. You'll be happy with either one.
