Subject: Few ?'s... IP: Logged
Message: First of all, just wanted to say what a great board this is, just found it and I have a few questions... I have a 2001 2wd dakota V6 extended cab and I'm having the following issues...
1. I'm starting to get sound when I turn the steering wheel. It sounds like something is rubbing against a rubber boot.
2. In the engine it sounds like I'm getting a flutter. I have been told that this is normal. Is this true?
3. I get a knock sometimes out of the passenger side rear of the truck when I pull into a driveway. I was told this is the limited slip differential. Is this true?
4. When I first start up the truck, and put in reverse to back down the driveway, the anti-lock brakes let me roll for about 4 feet before I stop. Then when the truck gets warm, I have no problems. Dealership said there was no problems.
I know, quite a few questions, any help would be greatly appreciated. I bought this truck new, and have not had any major issues so far. But now that I have hit 38,000 miles, all these things are starting to occur. The thing of it is, it's only 2,000 miles out of warranty.
Again, thanks for any input...
Shaun

Message: With regard to #3, I have the same problem. I'm told by others that it's a cab mount that flexes when going up a tight right handed driveway. I can't help you with the other questions.

Message: I should have posted on number 1 that the sound is coming from the steering column.

Message: The steering column of my '91 Spirit would occasionally moo at me, if that's what you mean by #1. It was always good for a laugh. Every year or so I had to spray some silicone on the steering column where it passed through a boot at the firewall.
Also check the Dealer Recalls forum. There's a TSB regarding the column popping, and I seem to remember another one about the column chafing the harness for those with a manual trans.
