Even my old '89 Dak with aerodynamics like a brick averaged 15mpg, and I drove the crap outta that thing. Stepping back further, my first car, a '69 Charger, had a warmed 318 that'd smoke the Dak, but it regularly got 19mpg. Makes no sense.
Anyway, keep it in good tune.
Adjust the throttle cable to allow the tranny to upshift sooner. This cuts into performance, but it works.
Make the engine more efficient with performance mods. Better flowing intake and exhaust are the best places to start.""
The reason is because of the EPA mandated 14.7:1 air/fuel ratio, which at cruise is very rich compared to cars of the 60s and 70s. Get a vehicle in the 15-16:1 ratio during cruise and watch your mpg go up. The EPA has been making us waste billions of gallons of gas over the yrs.

Message: I know what you mean. My 68 Charger wasn't much, but it had a much larger (440) engine than my 2000R/T and it had no overdrive. It was a 3spd automatic. I had a 2400 stall convertor and 3.55 LSD with 295/60/14's in the back and it would get 16mpg on the highway cruising at 70mph. It had a 280 cam, Elderbroc Performer intake, 750cfm Elderbroc Carb, Mopar Performance Mechanical Advance Electronic Ignition w/Jacobs ignition box-wires-coil, 1967 Police Interceptor heads, Headers, Rhoads Lifters, 9.8:1 compression, and gapless rings. It would smoke my R/T.

Message: my 1970 T/A challenger 340 SIX PAK with a 3.55 posi G6015 tires and 3 speed torqueflite would get 21mpg highway and 12 to 14 mpg if i stayed out of the secondarys on weekends i was lucky to get 8-10 mpg it was awesome compared to my Dakota which doesnt do much better on gas even with an overdrive both vehicles cruised at 65mph at 2000 RPM

Message: You can have the air fuel ratio changed by a good flasher. I did to 16:1. It really didn't have more than a 1 mpg impact on it though. Probably was eaten by the heavy foot problem I have. A noticeable increase in torque with a small timing advance added also.

Message: Unfortunatly he's a little gray haired guy from Stoney Creek that builds drag cars and such for Thunder Valley over at the Bristol Raceway. Not nearly as much fun as the Flasher you alude to.

Save Money on Fuel Costs With AMSOIL

My personal experience. Industry tests have shown improved fuel economy of 2 - 5% in vehicles using synthetic lubricants.
However, it has been my experience that most people that switch see between 4% - 8% increase in mpg.

It is a PROVEN FACT that switching to synthetic lubricants vs. conventional crude oil increases your miles per gallon.
I have an onboard indash computer in my Lexus that monitors my Total Miles, My Current MPG, My Average MPG, my average MPH, my MPG since the last fill-up, etc.
I purposefully ran the odometer to 9,000 miles using Castrol GTX from the Quickie-Lube (changing the oil every 3,000 miles) ... before I switched to Amsoil 100% True Synthetic SAE 5w-30 which is the oil recommended for most Dakotas..
I do this with every new vehicle ... to test the oils by performing Used Oil Analysis, to monitor how much quieter it is using Amsoil, to monitor the fact that the engine runs cooler using Amsoil, and to monitor any positive changes in MPG using Amsoil.
I must see positive results with my own eyes to be able to truthfully talk about Amsoil.
The truth ...
After switching from Castrol GTX (at 9,000 miles) to Amsoil ... my average MPG (per tank) driving a combination of city and highway (living in Manhattan, NYC and commuting to my office across the GW Bridge in New Jersey) went from an average of 16.2 MPH over the test run of 9,000 miles using Castrol, to 18.1 MPG for the next 15,000 miles using Amsoil, averaging approximately 26+/- MPH.
18.1 MPG using Amsoil ... vs. 16.2 using Castrol ... a 13% increase
My vehicle currently has 24,000 miles on the odometer, the engine runs cooler, the engine runs quieter, and I am getting better gas mileage.
FYI ... The last long distance all highway miles trip I drove was to Lake George, New York and back, 200 miles each way, and I actually averaged 24 miles to the gallon on that trip ... using Amsoil SAE 5w-30 100% True Synthetic Oil ... and I believe I beat the window sticker ... and that was driving 75 mph +/-.

I have experienced the same (or similar) results in my last 3 "new" vehicles (all three had in-dash on-board computers), except for a "used" Jeep Wrangler that was purchased with 21,000 miles on the odometer, testing between 21k and 30k using dino, and then testing from 30k forward using Amsoil. The Jeep tests were less scientific and factual. The Jeep did not have the computer system.
