Subject: do we have tie rod adjustment sleeves IP: Logged
Message: I was at rockauto.com looking at prices for tie rod ends and
noticed they show adjustment sleeves. My factory service
manual has an exploded diagram of the rack and pinion
steering unit and the tie rod components but nowhere does
it show or talk about adjustment sleeves. Does someone
out there know what's going on here? I'm wondering why
rockauto lists parts the factory says aren't even there.

Message: i believe that you do. the "adjustment sleve" is a threaded tube which attaches the tie rods to the shaft in the steering rack. the sleeve treads onto the shaft first. then the tie rod end is threaded into the sleeve. the tie rod end is then attached to the wheel assembly.
the purpose of the sleeve is so that you can adjust the toe without removing the tie rod end from the wheel assembly. by loosening a "jam nut" the sleve can be rotated. rotating one direction toes out. rotataing the opposite direction toes in. after the toe is adjusted the jam nut is re-tightened. these are used every time a front end alignment is done on your truck.

Message: If you have rack and pinion you do not have an adjustment sleeve.

Message: Thanks guys. I have seen these on other vehicles I've oned
but not on my 99 Dakota. Unless they are hidden under the
boots, they are not there at all.
