Message: Extra weights nothing to brag about for sure. The reason it keeps getting brought back up is because you or Brian mentioned the Dakota weighing less than the Silverado. I pointed out the fact that my 2000CC R/T weighed 40lbs more than the 5.3L Siverados I was beating. Yah kept bringing up the missconception that Dakotas were beating Silverados because they weighed less. I proved you wrong. That was nearly 2 weeks ago when this whole argument started. Now we've come full circle. If anyone should know why the weight issue was ever an issue it should be you and Brian.

Message: aww man... I thought this thread was dead.
Any way, As far as I see it, the dakota R/Ts advantage over the silverado and alot of other trucks out there is not weight or power. Most trucks dont come with 3.92 rear gear. The chevys that do come with a biger gear are usually hevier 4x4s with taller tires that kill the gear.

Message: Well, actually I have done that. It was very close, but I did squeek the Silver out. I did get beat by a new F150 doing the same thing at 45mph. The problem isn't the engine, it's the transmission's delayed downshift. The R/T's 46re SUCKS!. The Mopar performance PCM makes it worse. My 2002 RC 4.7L will beat my R/T from any speed. It will also beat any Ford or Chevy from any speed. The multiple downshift the new "multi-speed" automatic has seems to always hit the right gear and it does it very quickly. Do to the the R/T's torque advantage and it's posi-trac rear end it will beat my 4.7L through the 1/4mile. It does it off the line though. Once both trucks are hooked up the 4.7L actually catches my R/T a little. The 5.3L Chevy is probably a better all around street machine than the R/T, but the 4.7L RC is better than both of them. Especially in a 5spd. But, I'm comparing a 4.7L-RC to a 5.9L-CC. If the R/T was a RC then there would be no contest. The R/T would beat my 4.7L. The 5.9L in the R/T is nothing special. The only reason I kept my 2000R/T and sold my 2002RC 4.7L is because I can buy almost anything to make performance upgrades to the R/T. I also like X-cabs. I feel like 4100lbs is too much for a little 4.7L that only makes 295ft-lbs of torque. So in other words, Dodge has missed the boat again. Nobody drives reg-cabs anymore and if want a Dodge truck for street performance you have to settle for a 4.7L-RC. I would have kept my 4.7L-RC, but I got tired of waiting on DC and the aftermarket to start making performance upgrades for the 4.7L. I think a lot of Dodge fanatics will soon do what I just did and go back to the 5.2's and 5.9's. For about $1,000.00 I will have have my R/T's engine making enough HP to overcome the inadequacies of it's transmission. Where's that damn 6spd Dodge never gave us for the Dakota?

Message: TurboAction,
The tranny is one area I haven't done much with since the 80's. I used to build 727's, 350T's & 400T's all the time. It was easy back then. I could tear one down and have it back in a weekend. I have not screwed with any of these new electronic controlled transmissions. If I could get the transmission in my R/T to respond to my right foot like my 2002 4.7L did, it would run a hell of a lot better. I have to really be on my toes in this thing or I will get beat on all day.
What will the torque convertor change at cruising speeds to make this thing shift down faster? I understand that it will launch harder from a stand still. I don't need it to launch harder than it does already. I want this thing to kick down like the 4.7L does.

Message: Had the same prob with a 5.0 mustang I had.... you could try changing the gear ratio (stiffer) so it gets yoour rpms at a higher level at cruising speed gets yor trans to "kickdown" into passing gear in the engine's powerband at higher rpms,---- some vehicles kickdown at cruising speed into passing gear at too low rpm's. A converter will (good converter ie; turbo action/tci/ati,....not sure if they make em for your app.) slip up thru the rpms at a stab of the throttle at cruising speed. Therefore the rpms go up And it hits harder in passing gear. Either way, gear change or converter change, or both) will give you the results. Stiff torque converters KILL power like nothing else.

Message: Turbo,
It's an R/T. It comes with 3.92's already. That's why I'm saying it's a slush-box. My 4.7L will shift down, hit redline, shift back up, and be 3 carlengths ahead by the time my R/T finally shifts down. It is accellerating, it's just slow to downshift. By the time it finally downshifts, it is going too fast and it is out of the power band of the low revving 5.9L. If it would shift when you first nail it, it would be in it's power band. It speeds up 3-6mph before it shifts. The 4.7L's auto shifts instantaneously.

Message: Sometimes mine dosnt kick down right away either. The converter also likes to lock up in third at wide open throtle. That is where it seems to have the slow kick down. Its like the converter is trying to stay locked up. Its really anoying when I just want to speed up only 10 or so mph at or just below highway speed. It really drags the engine down. I have to floor it to get another ten mph out of it.
This has been my biggest complaint about my truck.

Message: Brian,
I know I'm going to get hammered on this one, but I believe mine is doing the same thing. I've been trying to figure out what that "thing" is imediately after it goes into 3rd at part throttle. It shifts fine into second and when it hits 3rd it does something very different. For one, it shifts way to early into 3rd. It does seem like the convertor is locking up in 3rd gear. Is that even possible? I could swear that is what's happening. When it does this, it is usually around 40-50mph and if you floor it at that moment it has a terrible delay in the downshift. By the time it finally downshifts it's too late and the engine is having to turn too many RPMs to take advantage of the down shift. I wish they would start making aftermarket parts for the 4.7L. The shift into 3rd is almost imediately after the shift into 2nd. My 98 R/T didn't have this problem. It downshifted slower than the 4.7L auto (45??) but it was much faster than this 2000R/T. It also ran .3sec faster in the 1/4.

I`ve had alot of arguments over this topic. When I describe the problem, The answer I always get is, the converter will not lock up under w.o.t. and I am pretty sure mine is. Sounds like yours is doing the same thing. I was able to prove it to a freind of mine (who thought I was nuts) one night at the track. I gave him the keys and told him to take it down the track 2 times. 1st time, just go down the track normal, and 2nd time lightly press down on the brake pedel(just enough to triger the brake lights) when the truck hits 3rd gear. That sends a signal to the pcm to shut off the lock up. Believe it or not, it will go 1 to 2 tenths quicker when you press the brakes. Talking to several mechanics about this, the lock up on these trucks are controled by the pcm and there is no flash fix for it. Ive tried to shift the truck at a higher rpm in to 3rd but it dosnt seem to help.
Bowtie
I have thought about the power programers(for my truck just became availible a few months ago) but every thing that I have seen on them, there is no cure for the lock up problem. And to be honest the only thing good about them (from what I have heard on the later trucks) is that you can remove the speed limiter. I dont think the programers afect the dodge trans as good as they do the chevys.

Message: Brian,
I have contacted Hypertech several times about what the power tuner is supposed to control on the Dodges. I've emailed them twice and called them once and all three times I have gotten 3 different answers. That's why I want to find someone that has bought the thing and see them download the new program for myself. I want to watch them reprogram tire size, shift points, and top end limiter and then go out and test it. I WILL $50.00 CASH TO ANYONE IN THE MEMPHIS, TN. AREA!!!!!
One time that I called Hypertech they told me that it wouldn't change tire size or shift points. He said all it would do is advance the timing and move the top end limiter up.
I'm going to try that brake trick. If that's the case I will install a swith under the dash I can flip on to actuate the brake lights at the track. I can also wire a wide-open-throttle switch that would activate the brake lights. It would work like a throttle position switch for nitrous.
Thanks, you have given me something to work with.
