Subject: t-case ? IP: Logged
Message: Just out of curiosity, what sort of life expectancy could i expect to get out of my transfer case? (NV231). Also, ive heard that if the its not used enough the chain will lock up and then when used it will strip the gears. True or no? Living in the Northeast i use it of course in the winter but not the other 9 months of the year. How can i make it last as long as possible (yes,i know to change the fluid).

Message: The general rule of thumb is to give your 4x4 a work out in 4WD at least once a year. Put it in 4 high and run a little bit, then 4 low. It just keeps the oil circulating and keeps everything properly lubed. I do it twice a year, once in the summer and once in the winter. But then, that could be an old wives tale and it's fine with nothing. Dunno man...

Message: I have owned a few other vehicles with this transfer case in the past and never had a problem. I too live in the Northeast, so most years the 4x4 gets used in the winter time. :-) The only other thing I would recommend is changing the oil in the xfer case every 30k or so. Like everything else that requires lubrication, changing the fluid once in awhile seems to make them last longer...

Message: I don't use mine as much. of course I do had a leak in the middle of the seem. Its been that away ever sine I bought it with 145K miles on it. I took it to the dealer and they said it would be about 245 dollars to fix it. Well, the truth is I'm going to get the leak fix but I want to do it at a cheaper price.
I live in the South Central part of the country and I don't encounter snow very much (but still hopeing for it) I useally lock in my Transfercase if I'm going down a sloshy gravel road or out in the field on a hunting trip.
The NP-231 is a very relible T.C and mine still works exceptionaly well for truck thats pulled boats out of steep grassy ramps.
My cousin owns a 97 Ram 4x4 thats equipted with the Np-242 and has never been engaged for over year. I locked it in comming out of while driving down a field road with no problems

Message: I use my 4-hi several times in the winter in the snow. I use it probably 3 or 4 times a year on mild trails that need 4-Low. I had to have my transfer case rebuilt at 56k miles.
