Man I installed new rotors ( Raybestos) and new pads ( raybestos) and the rotors are showing little tiny cracks again. I guess for every 2 pad replacements I need new rotors also. Im gonna try Bendix rotors or wanger if they make them
This sucks. any of you guys had aftermarket rotors that dont crack

Dude..I had the same problem with that combination of brakes on my dakota. Together they only lasted about 5000 miles (2 months in the hot Texas weather) before they cracked. I do all city driving by the way.

Anyhow, about 3800 miles ago I adjusted the rear drums (self adjuster) with a screw driver and finally my brakes haven't warped the rotors and the truck actually stopped a lot better. (Going on 3 months now)

Try that this time and I bet your brakes last a lot longer.

99Dak5.2L4x4 is correct, adjust your rear brakes. I had a similar problem with my 00 4.7 Dak and warped a set of rotors in 5K. When I put the replacement rotors and pads on I also adjusted the rear drum brakes. Big change, the truck no longer nose dives when braking.

This set of rotors and pads lasted about 40K because I adjusted my rear brakes everytime I changed the oil (about every 6-7K). The rear brakes only do about 20% of the braking, but if they are not adjusted the fronts are doing 100% of the braking, not too good. The pads and rotors thet lasted 40K were el'cheapo AutoZone parts, $30 rotors and $20 pads, same ones that only lasted 5k without the rear drums adjusted.

Just back up fast, slam on the brakes till it skids, several times. This does the same thing.
I posted about this years ago. On my 01 QC, 46K, the same stock brakes from the factory, still doing great! Turning the spider screw thru the slot in the drum does the same thing.

I back up fast, skid the fronts, about once a week, it really helps.

Good luck

Sure, the dak braking system leaves something to be desired.

But how many of all these, 'oh rotors warped (which they don't warp), etc., have happened when they kept their rear drums in proper adjustment. There's ways around a minor weak point.

Then, like most drivers, people accellerate unti lthe last possible minute, even to a stop sign, DON'T glide any, and SHUT IT DOWN, at EVERY STOP!

You think that puts about 200% more duty/wear on the front brakes? Ya think?

WTF, Matterof Fact, "oh rotors warped (which they don't warp)", I think your clueless. Rotor's do warp, which means thier two sides are no longer parallel and perfectly flat. This causes the pads and caliper to vibrate on the uneven surface when braking.

Guess that's why your riding aroung with pulsation coming from your break pedal and steering wheel and blaming it on crappy tires or bad roads, Clueless.

Tell you what, I can put 10 times more wear on my brakes towing my boat to the lake one time than driving around town for a 2 months. Never smelled my front brakes getting hot coming to a stop sign in town, but it always heats them up dropping 3000'ft in elevation in 4 miles approaching the lake.

You know the realy sh1tty thing of it all, my Dak replaced a 350 S-10 which never ,NEVER, heated up the brakes going down the this same grade pulling the same boat. I don't mean to come across like the stock S-10 brakes were great, I just think the Dak brakes are crap for the size of the truck.

Hey, DSW,

No YOUR rotors probably do warp.

If you would, please read this ENTIRE article, I found from another's post on this site.

There IS uneven buildup on the rotors, but rarely are they really warped, if it was really warped, the thing would probably come apart going down the road.

Like I said, Maybe YOURS warp, but, READ the ENTIRE article. (copy and paste into your browser, right click after it's highlighted)

DSW,

Do you use a lower gear during all that descending that you do pulling your boat?, or just let the brakes do the extra work?

Do ever get a nose bleed during those descents? I hate it when that happens!

Whoo boy. This looks like fun!

My front rotors warped (wether you want to call it warping or glazing) all the time. Pulsating brakes and whatnot. I was told by a Dealer service tech that it was caused by uneven torque values on the 6 lugnuts. "OK. Whatever," I thought. But each time my rotors began to pulsate, it was usually after my tires had been removed for some service or another. I would retorque the tires when they began to pulsate, and eventually they would fix themselves. I'm not sure fix is the proper word, but I kept the original rotors and pads to 110k miles. I put on Powerslots with Hawk pads. I had to replace them because the inside pad on my passenger side caliper disintegrated and crumbled apart. On the flip side, when I did remove the rotor and compared it to a new one, it was about 25% the thickness of a new rotor. Things that make you say, "hmmmmm"

I also have a problem readjusting the rear brakes. The reverse trick doesn't work with my truck. I have to crawl under there about once a month to adjust the rear brakes, but I do a lot of driving. The truck does pitch forward quite a bit when I brake. Make my passengers fell as if I go around slamming it on all the time.

He he. Gets fun sometimes.

Are there any rear drum upgrades out there? Seems like there should be some way of making them better. Also seems like you shouldn't have to adjust them constantly.

Twix - what you describe is an uneven buildup of pad material - not warping. You can clean that off with lighter braking. While rotors wear much more since the advent of semi-metalic pads, they shouldn't be a quarter of the thickness of new. Did you instead mean 25% smaller ? "Matter of fact" - I occasionally get the glazing - even with my larger 11" rear brakes correctly adjusted. And that's with an experienced pick up driver who downshifts pulling his boat on large downhill stretches, and always watches for clues ahead as to when traffic might be slowing or stopping. Most of us like our trucks very much, but there is no denying this is one of its shortcomings even driven normally. Sure, keeping your rear brakes adjusted will help, but its a shame Rob454 hasn't seen a better answer to his question yet. Could some of you who have now put a lot of miles on the alternatives offer a little advice here ? And thanks to STS (or whoever is using his name this time, as I'd bet he still thinks his truck is a sports car) for yet another moronic posting.

Well im pretty easy on brakes. I dotn go slamming them unless some idiot cuts me off or something.
THey arent vibrating when i brake. my stock ones did shudder and also cracked at 42 000. i had them turned and they did it again at 49 000 I was gonan turn them again but the guy said they cant be turned. So I got new ones. these have no pulsing ot vibrating when I brake they have these tiny tiny cracks that are showing up. I do tow my jet skis but its only about 1800 pounds mabey 2000 alltogether. I was thinking of swapping to rear disc but nobody makes them ( at least I dont think so) and to purchase them from the dealer would be insane on price.
I still think the brakes are too small for the size of the truck. I jsut want a set of discs and pads that dont have problems.

Damn, now I am going to have to start saying that I have "Cementite" deposits on my rotors instead of saying that the rotors are warped. I guess I'll just have to say that the surfaces of the rotor are not parallel and perfectly flat which causes the pads and calipers to vibrate on the uneven surface when braking,,, as I did in my earlier post. Whether it's due to warping or cementite deposits.

Warping is a common term used to say that the rotors are not true and the surfaces are not parallel. Don't think I have ever heard the term Cementite deposits before reading that article and it's probably going to be the last. I can just see a service writer saying that there are cementite deposits on the rotors and some lady freaking out because she never drove through a construction site. If I can place a dial indicator on a rotor and see excessive runout on the disc then I am going to call it warped so everyone knows what I am talking about.

STS, I don't drive my truck like a sports car, but I do drive it like a TRUCK. When was the last time you saw a Viper or Corvette pulling a 3000# boat? These trucks should have enough breaking to stop their rated load without problems. Even with using transmission braking my Daks brakes get hot.

Kowalski,

No, I meant what I said they were only 25% thickness of the original thickness. When I wednt to bang the rotor off the hub, the back of my passenger one shattered. They were pretty thin.

Most of the posts I see here and at AADT newsgroup report few to no problems with the powerslot rotor/ Hawk pad combo, so I installed them earlier this week. I would give them a try. I don't notice better braking, but I never expected to. I just wanted a pad/rotor combo not suspect to the glaze/warp factor.

there is one major problem with the "Just back up fast, slam on the brakes till it skids, several times. This does the same thing." methode. the brakes could be so far out of adjustment that no significant presure is applied by the rear shoes, and if that is the case you will not effect any adjustment, it is best to put it up on the rack and adjust each side till it drags slightly then back off a click or two till it don't, then leave it alone for 5000 miles and do it all over again. For myself, it is also a safer way as the only roads i drive on that I can safely back up at hi speed and then "slam then on till i skid" are the interstates and I think the guy in the semi commin at me might have a bit to say about that. The city roads are way more busier and i dont feel safe doing that either.

I know. It almost ticks me off that I just had my brakes inspected, and I was told they were perfectly fine. I never did sloppy work like that when I worked for Firestone. I always broke out the calipers. But, that's just me ;-)
