Subject: all the 4x4's like this??

Ok i know that 4x4's are not that much slower than a normal dakota. I also know that the 4x4 have to run though a lot more tranfer cases than a normal truck. I love my 88'dakota, i got it this fall. i dunno if it needs a tune up or what, it also has about 31 inch allterrane tires too. but it seem like it needs some thing. i think that it is to slow even for a 4x4 what could be wrong?? sorry if my post sound dumb.
Thanx

Scott, do you have a V6 of V8? What is the gear ratio in the rear differential? There should be a tag on the hood with the differential info, if not there is a metal flange on one of the diff bolts.

Most likely, the 31" tires are sapping power from the motor since they are larger than stock. If you have a V6 with lower gear ratio, it will not accelerate fast. How many miles on the motor?

Don't expect pre-92 Magnum engines to perform the same way post 92 Magnums do, they were greatly improved for the Generation II Dakotas.

Next set of tires, try 30x9.50s. If you have heavy steel rims, and can afford it, swap to lighter aluminum rims, then again if you can afford that, you are better off changing the ring an pinion gears in the rear and retaining the 31s.

Get some All Terrain tires if you aren't going off-road much. If you want a good tire that will perform well, go with BF Goodrich AT KOs, they are one of the best.

Then again, if you are not using them in the winter, get some MTs and have fun. Cooper makes some Discoverer mud tires.

Hey did you ever figure out what your gear ratio is? My truck is an 88 short box with a v-6 and 5 speed, it seems like I don't even need 5 th gear. I can run at 120 kph (75 mph) in 4 th no problem. I would like to change to a lower gear ratio to get more out of my transmission. Any suggestions?

Get the 31's off the Dak and put the factory
rim and tire size back on and 99% of your
problems will go away.

The 3.9 V6 is a great little package but never
designed for that kind of abuse.

Well, he DID originally post to say his truck was s-l-o-w, right? It takes a long time to diagnose the problem and type all those letters (not to mention run the spellcheck).
