Subject: Front hub bearing bad IP: Logged
Message: I have a '95 Dakota 4x4 with ABS. I'm getting a loud hum going down the road starting at around 30 mph. I've narrowed the problem down to a failing front wheel hub bearing. However, I'm not sure which one (drivers or passengers side) it is since the noise is constant anywhere in the front cab area when driving.
The only clue I have is that when I bank around a curve to the right (turn the steering wheel to the right) the noise goes away until I straighten the vehicle out again. This does NOT happen when I bank/turn the sterring wheel to the left. Can anyone help? I'm assuming it is the right front hub bearing since, when the wheel is turned to the right at highway speed, weight is lifted off the right wheel, hence not as much stress on the bearing?

Message: I just replaced the hubs on my truck..had the same noise...went away on sharp left turns...strange though, contrary to what I thought the right side was bad, seemed that it got quieter when weight was put on it.You wont be able to feel any free play like a regular bearing, but if you turn the hub by hand the bad one will feel notchy/sandy and the good one will be smooth.Problem is you'll probably have to remove the caliper/rotor and cv shaft to feel it...

Message: Just my personal opinion, but if one side is bad, the other can't be far behind. The bearings shouldn't be too expensive to be worth the trouble of having the same problem again. I would replace them both.

Message: Actually you are correct, I went ahead and replaced both because I plan on keeping the truck. The hubs were about $100 each from the auto parts store.
