 Subject: MIL Light Fix

Over the last few days, my 03 Dakota with the 4.7 has been having some odd behavior. Thursday and Friday when starting up in the morning, the temp gauge pegged on the right side to hot and the MIL light came on. I shut it off and re-started and all was good. On Friday the same thing, but the MIL light did not go off. I called the dealer and talked to the service department and we talked about a few possibilities and decided the best course of action was to bring it in for a check up.
The mechanic put it on the computer and found three error codes. All from various sensors dealing with temperatures. One code suggested that there was a firmware upgrade available. The updates were made and all was well again.
The nice thing is the truck when I drove it off the lot seemed to run smooth and quick. It did have a little hesitation on quick starts. But after the firmware upgrade, the truck runs really, really smooth and even quicker! And no hesitation! None…

I hope you understand the MIL light wasn't broken - it was warning you of other problems in the system....

the MIL light is actually a "Malfunction Indicator Light" and indicates that the computer has detected an "Out of Parameter" reading from one or more sensors that is connected to the computer. If the light is "broken" it does not function.

I understand the light was not broken. The point of my post was there was a firmware upgrade done to the computer on my truck and its performance increased significantly, as well as the mileage.
Maybe this will help others get a little more performance from their Dakotas.
