Caught the new 5.9, full time 4x4 QC with the 3.92 making its grinding (like driving over milled asphalt or driving with snow tires on), vibrating (sounds like a grouse drumming) sound. Here is the thing though: no vibration on the wheel or on the floor, just on the dash, yet the sound definetly sounds like it's underneath. Happens only in OD while going up hill about 50/55 and to infrequent to leave it at the dealer! Although it did it once in the low 40s before it down shifted. But if it is the tranny or converter or an axle why wouldn't I feel it in the steering? I've searched all over the net for answers. Have read it could be the cowl but since it is only up hill and only in OD kind of nixes that one. Also have read about it being the muffler. That one is possible since the truck is under load just then when it is happening and the slightest change in throttle pressure will stop it. HELP! I'm going crazy!

Break out your torque wrench and make sure your transmissions is bolted up good and tight, had similar symptoms in my moms trcuk and and after replacing driveshaft, hanger bearings etc they finally figured out the tranny was coming loose

I have essentially the same truck, 2001. Makes the same noise under a load, even after 40K miles. It hasn't changed any, and it is annoying. But I just ignore it.
