Message: the 3.9 2wd will get the better mileage. The 4.7 is a 4x4.

Message: but if you drive a 4.7 you won't want a 3.9. I almost bought the 3.9 but am glad I didn't.

Message: 4x2's get better mileage than 4x4's. Small engines get better mileage than big ones. It's a no brainer. The question is, How Much? You'll gain a little mileage with the v-6, about 2-3 mpg. But you'll have to work it a lot harder to get the same performance. I don't mean on the drag strip. I mean just general driving around and general truck usage. If you're doing light hauling, light towing, no snow/mud/off road, and don't climb long steep mountains, then get the v-6 WITH a 5 speed and 3.92 gears. Otherwise get a v-8.
As for which V-8, that's for you to decide. I'm not impressed with the 4.7l, so I have a 5.9. Only costs me 1 mpg for the bigger engine with lots more torque.

Message: Surely you have more to choose from than two Daks. If you live in hilly country, the v-6 will get roughly the same mpg as a v-8 from being overworked. 4.7 5-speeds get 18-20 mpg on regular cabs.

Message: My experience:
Dakota Club Cab 4x4 Auto 3.9 --> 14.5 to 16mpg
Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 Manual 4.7 --> 16.5 to 20mpg
I currently own the quad cab, defintely getting better gas mileage with this Dakota over my other one. The thing is, the 4.7s gas mileage is at or better than any 3.9 If you are looking at the 2004 models with the new 3.7...I am not sure as I have not heard any experiences from anyone with that engine, nor have I driven one yet.

Message: Not really. I was getting the 14.5 numbers stock. I did the following mods with it...
Intense Performance Stage II Intake
Dynomax #17748 Super Turbo
F&B Throttle Body
AP3923 plugs
Those mods got me to the 16.5 mark. That was my average for driving about 20% city and 80% highway per tank. The highest I ever got was on a trip to Cedar Point from PA when I hit 17.2
Those are just some honest numbers from the setup I had. That was within 20,000 miles before I traded it off on a new 2003 Quad Cab 4x4.
Also, I do have one of the heaviest foots around here as well, just the way I drive. Thing is I drive my 4.7 the same way, but honestly get better mileage out of it??? Why, I couldn't really tell you, that is just what happened between the two I have owned.

Message: The quad cab weighs over 4000 pounds. Quite a load to put on a six-cylinder. I'm not surprised the 4.7 did better. I have heard stories for years about 5.2 Daks getting better mpg numbers than 3.9's in hilly East Tennessee.

Message: I have a 99 5.2 5-speed, I tried the 3.9, I liked the power of the 5.2, I didn't get the R/T because it didn't, and still doesn't come with the manual tranny. I put over 600 miles a week on the truck traveling between Pax River MD and Virginia Beach I have the time to try different driving habits and found I could get as much as 19.5 MPG from my baby. The only mods I have are the APS plenum plate and 180 Stat.
Waiting to get Synthetics front to back and am working on a home brew intake, I do have a Cap on the bed reducing drag. I DON"T like the new Dakota body, so I will keep the 99.
