Subject: How 2 reset "Maint. Req" light?

I need some help here. My 1990 Dak 3.9L threw out a Maintainence Required light on the dash. I think it was whenI was having O2 sensor problems. But I replaced it and it is still light. How can I clear it? I un hooked the battery for a few minutes hoping to reset the computer. I checked all fluids to make sure it wasnt another problem being found. I check the Chiltons Haynes manual and it said nothing. That i could find. Thanks. Any help on this would be great.

Hey Joe E., the maintenence requried light is a reminder to check your emissions system,,pcv valve,egr valve, blah, blah ...basically a bunch of crap. You need a scan tool to turn it off.I have one, you're in florida right? -OR- try autozone they may be able to turn it off for ya. i live in orlando by the way...and check out my website! http://home.earthlink.net/~btm0106/

with the battery cable disconnected turn the key on(like you are trying to turn over the engine)this will drain the power from the system and reset the CIL(check engine light).

92Dak4x4, yeah Im in Gainesville. Going to school yet another semister! haha. I have seen your site and man let me tell ya, dam! Your dak is one of the nicest I have ever seen. Those tires look so evil. nd the color scheme is great. By the way, how did that new bumper hook up? Did it bolt to stock holes? Cuz thats cool as hell! And about the programmer. Is that one that can be used to recali the speedo and shift pts and stuff? I have 31s now, hopefully 32s or 33x10.50s soon. And also 4.10 rear gears. Just intrested if you like the programmer and what kind it is. Thanks for the offer as well.

wg34, Ill try the battery disconnect tomarrow. Thanks alot.

Just one more thing. I have put 3 O2 sensors in my dak. The last one being about 2 weeks ago. When I pulled out the old one, Its was totally filled with carbon. Is it shot, or can I clean it out for a spare? And about the EGR valve? Im not familiar with it. Whats it take to replace? I have had the truck for 4 years now and have done nothing to it. I don't have a programmer,it is only a scan tool..works up to 1992 only,you can read all the sensors,but you cant program anything,other than resetting the service light. As for the EGR valve,don't worry about it,if it's not working right it will either set a code,or if it sticks open it will cause a rough idle/stalling condition. 3 O2 sensors does not sound like something that is normal.they generally should last 30-60k miles,and was there large carbon deposits or was it just black and sooty? How many miles are on your truck? As far as the rear bumper,apparently the gen3 dakotas have the same width frame,so it was just a matter of drilling a few holes on the bumper brackets to get it to sit in the right place. Joe e if your interested,I am going to sell my old black wheels from my truck,cheap..15x8 with 5" (about ?) backspace,theyre nothing special but could make a good spare set,or whatever, probably $75 for all 4, no center caps...

Thanks for the reply dude. I see about the scanner. Does it seem to work well with your dak? About the rims, you have a 6on4.5in wheel right. Up to 1990 had 5 on 4.5in. Plus I need a backspacing like 3in. Dam, it would been great if they were what i needed. Thanks for the heads up tho.
About my engine, it was blowing out, lightly, black soot. Like the engine was running rich. It has a dual exit flowmaster system and no cat. Have been told that that may be my problem. But donno. NEWAYS, I got new gas of course, put in some tecron fuel additive. It was dusting my tailgate with black sh!t, I put my hand down to the duals and it was splattered with black stuff. Not a whole lot but enuf to mess with my head. Also put a new O2 sensor in and it helped. I have had problems with my idle now and then. Like when slowing to a stop, sometimes it sputters wanting to drop off. Its a 1990 V6 with like 125K so I expect some problems, but my H power is feeling bad. I am wanting to get 4.10s but am hesitating due to scared of my engine's bull sh!t happening in a big way. Loosing a piston or something! haha.

Well, Gotta run, thanks for you help. If you can give me any info on this engine stuff Id really appreciate it. Thanks again.
