Subject: Wheel Well Coating on new Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I just got my 2nd Dakota. This time a red 2003 SLT Plus Club Cab V8 4X4. My first was a black 1998 SLT Club Cab V6 4X2. I am digging the extra power, but I have some gripes. My main question concerns the wheel well coating. Is it common for the black coating to not completely cover the red in the rear wheel well area? This seems strange that it is either flaking off or was not fully covering the red. Anybody else notice this? Should I get the dealer to fix this?
Here are the rest of my gripes...
*Loss of the storage space in the drop down arm rest on the 40/20/40 seat.
*Loss of a lighter and ash tray. Damn Republicans! I'm switching parties! ;^)
*No more illumination around the ignition key.
*No more cover over storage area beneath
rear seat.
*Smaller glove box.
*Exhaust system looks like it isn't stainless steel any more. It doesn't appear to be pitched as stainless.
*Driver's side door doesn't appear to latch perfectly... can feel slight drop in door when opening from the inside.
*Truck bed "feels" like thinner steel.
What is up with Dodge?
One more question... can the 4X4 stickers be removed from the rear fenders without leaving a trace or is there a clear coat over them?

Message: no those stickers are structural. With improvements in engines, some things have to be compensated.

Message: Coating in rear wheel well. I know what ur talking about, i took to nearest car wash and high presure washed it and it started flaking off... i'm not gunna deal with it yet because i plan on getting the wheel wells done in the "spray in bed liner" stuff.
Loss of storage space in arm rest... be happy u have any there... mine is just cloth,... pisses me off.
lighter and ash tray can be bought on ebay for 5 to 10 bucks as "smokers option"
Illumination, ya that erks me as well, although i've gotten used to it.
smaller glove box,.. aren't u being a little nice..... i couldn't even stuff a 10 cd "cd case" in there.... damnit
go to dealer for slight drop of drivers's door, i'm not seeing that prob.
truck bed.... mines the same and i'm glad we don't have them blessed wholes at the top to put those bars in ther... who would want bars.
Dodge,... i think dodge is doing great considering they are keeping up with all the other car makers... i'll own dodge for the rest of my life.

Message: I spray Vortex for a living, abd ive done a few truck wheel wells in the stuff. the longest ( as far as time) was done about 2 years ago and the customer called me a few days ago to spray his garage floor. Looked at the wheel wells and they still looked great. dirty but otherwise fine. he did say it seemed to quiet the truck down a little.
He had the crap spray on undercoating on it before and it was a pain to take off but I took it to a power wash place and pumped 5$ in the machine and blasted it off

Message: I am going to have a Linux spray in liner put in this week. I was thinking about maybe having the wheel wells done as well... or, a couple of years ago a bought a can of 3M undercoating (PN 08881) for a restoration project that I never completed. I am sure it is still good.
I think this is the tacky black stuff. It has been years since I used anything like it. The stuff I painted my '72 Mustang's trunk and wheel wells with was brush-on. As I remember, I didn't allow enough drainage in the trunk and ended up carrying a couple of gallons of water in the pockets of the trunk... live and learn.
I really like the idea of sound proofing. Have you ever used the bedliner stuff in place of undercoating? My dealer didn't seem to think that was a good idea. I imagine one would have to be careful not to make bolts incapacitated by a thick coating. They said that they didn't think that the undercoating sprayer couldn't get in all the nooks and crannies that their sprayer's wand can. I would like to watch what they do.
Thanks for your comments and verification of my hunch that bedliner stuff can work for at least the wheel wells.
BTW, did your customer do the fronts as well? I wonder how well the bedliner stuff would adhere to the plastic found on the inside of the front wheel wells.
Also, on the stickers mentioned in my first post... it really looks like it is clear coated. I want them off, but does that involve careful sanding/buffing and a few new clear coats?
