Subject: Paint sealant or quality wax?
IP: Logged

Message:
I just purchased a 03 Dakota and decided to go along with the lifetime paint warranty that included the use of a paint sealant. After doing some research, I have been told that it is nothing more than a $300 wax job. Is that really the case? I have searched this forum and could not find any definitive answer. I was told by the salesman that they would not wet sand it to get some of the water spots off the hood and the paint sealant would do the job. This doesn't sound right. Any info any of you can provide will be grateful. Are there any detailers out that do this for a living? Is it worth the $300?

Thank you for you time...

i usually wax my truck. then i use a paint sealent. my truck is a 92 and and the paint looks beautiful on it. a deep glossy color. any cleaner wax will get the water spots off.or rubbing compound. the paint sealant i only use once a year. i would do it yourself if you can the sealant isnt that expensive.

They probably will just buff your truck with some compound to get the water spots out. I have detailed both professionally and at home for 15 or so years. A good three stage: Cleaner, polish, and wax, will make your dak shine! Your 300. bucks goes to a part timer kid, who will probably just slap a coat of wax on, not worth it in my opinion. I normally three stage my dak twice a year, both times, I wash my dak with regular dish washing soap to remove old wax and deposits. Then I may just wax, usually touch up spray wax in between 3 stages. I reccommend a good orbital buffer, with plenty of terry cloth pads, and rags, an pld tooth brush(good for removing excess wax around jams, molding etc). Only use a high speed buffer if you are comfortable, and know what your doing. Our dodges have such a thin layer of paint. in a blink, you will burn right through. Some people might suggest to clay your dak as well, up to you, I think it is a matter of preferance. Good luck

With that price tag you should be getting a warranty on the finish also.
They should make sure that the finish is clean of defects before applying the sealant. I think it works great.

The dealer "Paint Sealant" is just pure profit. How often will they re-apply it? What about swirl marks? If they use a sealant with water spots under it they will be there for a looong time!

What does the "life time paint warranty" cover? Does it guarantee your paint will NEVER fade or peel? That might be worth it unless there is a deductable or it's pro-rated.

To apply a sealant right you gotta clean, polish than seal. Any good detailer can do this and it's alot less then $300!!! Same thing goes for the dealer added "fabric protection", it's just a spray can of ScotchGuard!

Yes, it is a lifetime warranty and they will re-apply every 3 years. And they do guarantee the paint will never fade or peel. If so, it is repainted and a loaner vehicle is provided.

I went down to the dealer today and asked to see just how it is done. I guess they will clean, then polish and then seal the paint. The word teflon came up several times. They said that my satification is guaranteed, what ever that means. I have an appointment tomorrow morning. Ill let you khow how it goes.

Thank you all for your replies.

Yep! you got screwed, although if they gaurentee the finish for the lifetime of your truck, thats a good deal just hang on to ALL of you gaurentee paperwork.
I work at a body shop and I get that question all the time. Usually all it is, is carnuba wax or just plain ole wax. And ALL newer cars have clear coats on them from the factory.
pbxr is absolutly correct in his reply. Your money would be better spent on a good detailing two or three times a year.
