Subject: Catalytic Converter Problem?? IP: Logged
Message: Hi guys..
I'm from Brazil, and I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota 3.9 V6...
There's a hissing sound from the exhaust and no torque (I can't pass the 2.000 RPM..)...
Is this a catalytic converter problem?!
What Can I do ??
If I cut it out, the check engine light will turn on?? (I'm not sure, but I think that will cause an error in the O2 sensor...Am I right?!)
Well..thanks in advanced..
See yah!

Message: I'm no mechanic, nor have I heard of this problem with Dodge. However, years ago a guy I carpooled with had a problem (with his Mazda) similar to what you are describing. When accelerating, there was a hiss that sounded like someone was draining the tank on an air compressor.
It turned out to be his muffler - the insides were rusting to the point where bits were falling/dangling and restricting the exit of the exhaust.
I'd check either the cat or the muffler. Does either rattle when you smack it with a mallet?
