Subject: After synthetic.... is back to dino okay IP: Logged
Message:
I lost my job a few months back and money is tight. I was using synthetic oil but now I can only buy the cheap stuff till I get a new job.
Can I switch back to dino oil for now and then switch back to synthetic later?
What kind of problems may come out of doing this?
Thanks,

Message: There should be no problem switching back and forth, or even mixing the two for that matter. They are fully Compatible.

Message: Alan, if you change synthetic oil every 6 thousand miles or conventional oil every 3 thousand miles it comes out to be about the same money. I have been using synthetic and changing it every 6-7 thousand miles for almost twenty years and I have never had any engine problems.

Alan,
I heard once that if you started eating Mexican food, you can no longer switch back to Chinese. *wink *
Does anyone know how these rumors/myths/old-wive's tales get started?
However, I do know that you don't want to chase an imported beer with a domestic beer --- if you do, the American beer will taste skunky ... especially in the summer heat.
This is my "funny" for the day --- it is July 4th.
Switching is okay ... stick with quality oil.

Message: do you remeber the old motor oil advertising jingle
"Motor oil is Motor oil"?
There was a reason for that, as most "synthetic" motor oils are based on dino oil in the first place. don't be fooled by all the fancy hype as P.T. Barnum once said, " Another fool is born every minute." are you fool enough to fall for the hype? My company owns 6 vehicles, some have as much as 230,000 miles on them, 5 have more then 130,000 all on dino oil, and they all run fine. The differnce? I spent a he11 of a lot less in oil changes then you guys did....

SYNTHETICS ARE SUPERIOR !!! READ & LEARN !!
First, Many FALSE (not 100% pure) "synthetic" motor oils are based on (extra refined) dino oil, which was started by Castrol and their false marketing of "extra refined petroleum (dino) oil - a FAKE SYNTHETIC". "True synthetics" are created in the laboratory - to be uniform in size and shape and they DO perform MUCH better.
NASA, ARMY,NAVY,MARINE Corp., Coast Quard use synthetics in evarything that has an engine gas, diesel, turbine or scram jet!!!
Lets remember that the reason that synthetics were developed to the point that they are now is due in part to the military. The military had real issues with dino oil. In cold artic conditions it jelled and the equipment had to be left runing almost around the clock cutting into fuel supply and engine life. In cramped engine compartments surrounded by armour plate the oil would break down quickly due to heat saturation even after the engine was turned off. Then the advent of jets engines came along. Dino oil just could not take the combination of RPM's, internal heat with air charges coming in at -80 degrees, and tons of fuel was! My uncle tested Super Sabers and he talked about the problems they had with fluctateing oil pressure at 90,000 feet! I do not like it if I see flucuateing oil pressure in my parking lot (much less a guy at 90,000 feet)!
There is also not one single professional race team running dino oil! THEY ALL USE SYNTHETIC's. Most factory lubes are either synthetic blends or they are 100% synthetic.
All GM trucks come filled with TRUE 100% Synthetic in both diff's and crank case, and group III (one of the semi-synthetic fakes) in the transmission. GM has elimanated the drain plug in trucks and SUV's equipted with 8.652 rear diff's filled with synthetic. They also did away with a recomened drain and refill for this rear diff. The reason they did this was because synthetic lubes are so effective that it is impossable to establish a required drain interval. They now consider it "lubed for life".
The evidence is all around you. There have been numerious SAE paper's on the subject. I do not know of an additive around that will allow a dino base stock to carry a 6000 psi load like a good ester base stock can. I have not seen an additive in a dino oil that will allow any API aproved dino oil to flow at -84 or suvive 500 degrees. I have also not seen a dino oil additive that will allow it to get into the metal and lift out contaimanets with out sacrificeing lubricity.
I also have the privlage of seeing alot of engines self destruct slowly on the German autobahn at daily average speeds around 150-200 miles per hour. Like another poster (the Amsoil guy - just because he is tired of defending synthitics to "slopeheads" like you) ..... said dino will work fine - and you can switch - but let me add SYNTHETICS ARE MUCH BETTER. The white papers alone tell volumes about their superior base stocks!
If technology advances were left up to you, we would still be in the dark ages ... but I guess with a name like "slopehead " your IQ is right there with the caveman anyway. Can everyone spell lobotomy?

Message: That was well put Ralph. Alan, there must be a better way to save twenty bucks. Like I said already though, due to the extended drain intervals, synthetic costs no more money. You are actually saving money due to improved economy and engive longevity. Do you drink coffee, beer or smoke cigarettes? You manage to find the money for that probably. Cut back or quit one of those vices and you will save yourself a fortune.
