Subject: Tranny seems to slip when Dak is hot. IP: Logged
Message: When I have a large load - either towing a good sized trailer or a heavy load. The engine revs a LOT more to make the truck move. Seems as if the tranny is in some kind of slippage mode. This only happens on very hot days ( >100°) and with a heavy load. Trailer weighs around 5,000#. Truck is a 2000 Dakota 4.7 automatic with stand read end gears. Once the temperature comes down, everything is fine again. Happened last weekend when we were in Laughlin, NV pulling the trailer. 113° outside and the water temp needle was close to the top.
HELP!!!!!
P.S. The truck has 45K miles and has always done this.

Message: Sounds like you're testing that tranny and your engine at its limits. Nothing kills a tranny like heat. If you're in the habit of pulling a heavy trailer in heat like that, I'd seriously look into installing an auxiliary tranny cooler, if you haven't done so already. I'd get one rated for at least 24,000 pounds, or whatever will fit in front of your AC condenser, where I installed mine. You might also even look into a heavier duty radiator.

Message: 02Sport has a great suggestion. Definitely a temperature problem and the oil temp is affecting your status.
HOWEVER, I would run a POWERED cooler under the bed somewhere and not in front adding to incoming air temps. Hayden makes a few and NAPA has a selection of coolers. Also just add a 12" fan with zip strips and integrate a connection at the trailor that when you hook it up it keeps the fan on when the ignition is on. That works great...I put one on my 01 quad!

Message: 02Sport...where can I get a "heavier" duty radiator?
Thanks for the suggestions.

Message: Local radiator shops can make them... for around $500.
You may want to look into Griffin or Be Cool radiators. You may be able to pick up a universal aluminum radiator for a lower price.
Another route you may want to take is to add an external transmission filter. This will catch any small particles before they recirculate through your system. The added volume should help cool your tranny too.

Message: Thanks for covering my back, EBL. Check with Summit Racing or Jegs online, or call them up and ask them about a heavy duty radiator for your truck.

They both carry Griffin aluminum radiators, I believe. I've seen them in their catalogs. You might also check with your local parts stores, they should be able to fix you up.
