Subject: S/C on a 4x4? IP: Logged
Message: I have read where some of you want to put a S/C on a 4x4 and I cant figure out why. I know that its different strokes for differnt folks but are there any benefits of a S/C offroad? I can understand wanting to go fast no matter what you are in but is the 4x4 system on a Dak meant to be pushed that hard?

Message: I didn't do it for the offroad, I'm on the road 90% of the time. I'm doing it for the pesky 4x2's that think they are the fastest thing on earth:-).
So what, I'm a little heavier, I've got bigger tires, an extra driveshaft, better traction, and can outrun/runover whatever ricer decides to race me.
Some people would pretend their pickup is a sports car and drop it, put 20's on it, and then think they can actually go on a skidpad. That's just as silly:-).
I guess we are all different:-), thats the American way. At least we all have Dak's.

Message: The Dak can very easily be made to handle and out perform a great number of sports cars. No pretending. This probably isn't a good comparison but the Golf (not a sports car but he thinks it handles great) I was following (I knew the guy)waited untill we hit a very winding strech of road and punched it. With my 255 60 16" stock tires that come with the tire and handling group I buried it and screamed by him on a very tight long corner. If you ever get the chance and see an R/T or reg cab 2WD sport stand about 20 ft in front of it and look just how broad a wheel base they have. Throw some low profile tires on it drop it a couple inches with genuine performance parts (lowering the shi.. out of it so it's laying on the ground doesn't help) and I will take my truck over very many of the so called sports cars out there.

Message: Not to mention the Dakota 2WD is RWD which preferred over FWD as far as handling is concerned. Skip Barber racing school used to use the Dakota to teach handling at Sears Point.

Message: Cool, and yall are correct. It was a bad comparison. My point was the 4x4 stands to gain a lot from a SC, and that 4x4's in general get a bad rap from a performance standpoint.
Hmmm, maybe drop my 4x4 a little and put some 18's on it:-)...

Message: shawn, you say "i'm doing it to for the pesky 4x2s that think they are the fastest thing on earth". well if you need a SC to keep up than yes the 4x2's are faster than you and we know it. wait untill you incounter a SC 4x2.
why do people pay extra for 4x4 trucks and suv's and dont go off road?

Message: Eric,
I was speaking facetiously in my prior post (that means joking). I do take my truck off road, but not all the time. What’s the big deal, I was answering a question as to what’s the point of a Supercharger on a 4x4. I thought my answer was simple. I wanted more HP. I’m not arguing that a 2WD with a Supercharger could or couldn’t beat me, just answering Mr. Andrew who seemed to have 1,000 questions that day on various posts.
Please don’t assume that I do not go off road. I take about 7 – 8 trips a year to a 10,000-acre farm and a few other places and need the 4wd then, as well as during some winters. Please don’t stereotype people you don’t know into groups, I use my 4wd several times a year. I agree some folks buy them and never use them, but I don’t think it’s for you or I to judge their decisions.
Bottom line is I was joking, didn’t mean to rub anyone the wrong way. Since so few care about talking about true performance modifications I thought I’d BS with the rest of the crowd.
My .02,
Shawn
