Subject: Help! - scratches on my BRAND NEW Dakota IP: Logged
Message: I just picked up a brand new '03 Dakota Quad Cab (a beauty!), and immediately took it on a week-long camping trip. When I got home and washed it, I found a bunch of scratches alongside the bed on the passenger side. There are about 20 very thin and short (less than 1") scratches, all running in the same direction. I don't know how they got there, it must have been when I was reaching into the bed and hit it with a zipper or something. Whatever it was, it didn't take much. They're not very deep, but some go through the paint and I wasn't able to buff out any of them. Normally I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, but this truck is 2 weeks old and it's driving me crazy!
Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm considering the following options, any feedback would be appreciated:
1) Take it to a body shop for some touch-up paint. Can they restore it to it's original condition, or is it going to look worse in the end. Any idea about how much this should cost?
2) Try to restore it myself with some kind of magic wax/polish product? I tried TurtleWax Color Cure, and as expected it did nothing (I figured for $5 it was worth a try). Does anybody know of a similar product that actually works?
3) Live with it. It drives me crazy every time I see those scratches, but sooner or later it's going to happen anyway.
Thanks for your help.

Message: 1st suggestion is to try Meguiars scratch-x. If that fails do some research in your area and see if there are any companies/shops that do air brush touch ups. On one of my previous cars i had alot of stone chips on the front and they took care of them in about 1-2 hours. The expense was minimal compared to re-paint or body shop repairs.

Message: cop_out2000 - what kind of company would I look for to do an air brush touch-up? It sounds like you don't recommend going to a body shop. About how much should I expect to pay?
Thanks.

Message: you went camping, I go offroadin all the time in my 94 dakota sport 4x4, and those scratches are try georgia pinestripes. that's what we call them in georgia. I have them all over my truck, but my truck isn't as nice or new as yours. it was probably just scraping branches, did anyone else drive your truck while you were camping. maybe you didn't know they were driving it. we might have a mystery on our hands.

Message: cumak,
I can't remember the name of the company, but they were out of Chambersburg or Greencastle, PA. (There name was Aero Paint or Aero- something) I'm sure there are other locations and companies elsewhere. I actually found these guys when i worked at a car dealership. They were doing some work for them. The only thing about body shops for something that seems to be this minor is that it will more than likely be very expensive, and you also have to worry about the quality of paint matching in addition to the price.
