Subject: Governor on Dakotas???
IP: Logged

Message:
I seem to have a governor on my 2000 Dakota 4.7L that kicks in around 95 MPH. Is this true? The truck is pulling hard and when it gets to about 95 it abruptly starts jerking like a governor would do. I know it's not due to a rev limiter as the RPM is less than at lower gears. What gives? Anybody have any clue?

Doesn't appear to be rev related but speed related. I have rev'd the motor higher in 1 & 2 gear.

Cant remove the govener yet, but there is a trick to do to bypass it, but I wouldn't reccomend it, when you get just below the speed limiter, turn the key all the way to the start position, and hold it there, you can then drive through the limiter. It is dangerous to go much over because your tires aren't rated for that much speed. There is also no set rules as to which option, auto or manual have which limiter. I have an auto 4x4 and mine will kick in at 117 if I let it. The rev limiter on a 4.7 is around 6300 rpm, I have no idea on other engines, I think around 5400. Hope that helps, play smart if you are going to do the key thing.

Andrew

It is NOT RPM related in my truck's case. The governor kicks in on the V8 4.7L at about 95 Mile Per Hour not Rotations per Minute. I don't hit any rev limiter as I am taching a lot less than I do in other gears. In my case the tires are rated for the speed. I have a California spec truck if that makes any difference.

The Govenor is set at certain speeds do to drive shafts. The trucks with an Aluminum Drive shaft is set at 95/98, trucks with the steel drive shafts are set at 115/117. That is how speed limitations is decided.

Can the governors be changed along with a driveshaft change? I hate being "pulled" by a little sh$t import rice burner cause I walked away from him and he got me on the big end.

You have to get your PCM flashed to remove the computer controlled speed limiter.

Hey guys,
I have a 94 dakota that i just can seem to get parts for. Throttle cables and oil pressure sending units are all a bugger to find along with and perfomance parts to. Anyways, i want to bypass the governer without causeing any programming issues in the ecu(i know its pretty much imppossible). It tops out at about 150km/hr. Any step by step instructions?

thx

Andrew, what the heck you talkin' about? You can't turn your key to start when your engine is going or the starter will engage and damage the flywheel and starter teeth. And It's already in the start position when you're driving you nimrod!

It's not in the start position while driving there rimjob. It's close, but called the ON position. If it was in the start position while you were driving it wouldn't flip back to the on position after you start it.

I'm also guessing that dodge built in a safety switch, so that when the truck is in gear, it won't turn the starter.

I'm guessing on this because I have had my tranny jammed into park while I was doing 30 mph and it just went to neutral, kind of a safety switch.

Don't transmissions these days have some sort of pin that keeps your caar from rolling backwards (auto trans ) if they do won't they be sheared or bent if you put your tranny in park while driving? You can hear it chattering at very slow speeds when you do that.

I'm guessing "onehotdakota" probably has a 4.7 with the 45RFE or 545RFE. That has electronic controls for the transmission; and when it first came out, some reported it was programmed not to go into park or reverse at speeds above 5 mph. Never cared to test that myself, but a couple other guys have posted they saw similar results - probably why it didn't lock up.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Hypertech,or Superchips make a power programmer, where you can adjust the speed limiter. And they give you around 15 more horse power.
