Many of you talk about how you don't like the 3.9L. Can you explain that for me?

I did a seach, and all everybody talks about is speed. I'm not 19 anymore, I just want to know how reliable it is? Any problems with this specific engine type?

Not a thing wrong w/ the 3.9.

Great engine, lots of them w/ many-many miles.

I hear ya loud & clar on the "I am not 19 anymore" and I would guess you would be pretty happy with the choice if that is what you ended up with.

No regrets here.

Well guys, i AM 19, and i have the 3.9...and i love it. Ive driven every engine but the 5.9 r/t, and honestly, id still buy the 3.9. Now, granted, the 'im 19, lets go fast" bug still has me, but as far as gas milage and over all economy of the engine, i couldnt be happier, and it still has enough to roll 'em at a stop light. Anyway, dont be ashamed of the 3.9 if you have one, and if anyone runs their mouth, i have 2 words... nitrous xpress :D

There is nothing wrong with the 3.9 other than the fact that the factory timing chain does not last as long as the ones on the 5.2 and the 5.9.

A good aftermarket timing chain will last longer though.

3.9L engines are pretty reliable. I have a 2000 CC 4x4, Auto. I have had a water pump and a serpentine belt tensioner go bad, nothing else on the engine. Like above, some people have timing chain and belly pan go on them. Mine just clicked over 78,000. I have seen several 3.9L's with over 200,000.

Power is ok, just don't expect to have a lot of reserve power for towing or anything. It will still do the job, just not at 80 mph.

Gas mileage varies, but the 4.7 V-8 seems to get about the same mileage as the 3.9. I have 3.92 gears and 31" tires, and I get about 14 city 17 hiway.

I don't have any real complaints about mine.

Not a thing wrong with the 3.9 cept maybe low pulling power in some ranges. Have a 88 dakota I bought new that I just turned over to my 16 year old. Truck has 200k plus on it, runs like a top. Used for years to pull a utility trailer and a car trailer, and pulled a 30 foot travel trailer to the west coast and back 10 years ago. Currently it has a lifter tap and uses a quart of oil every 2 to 3 K miles, but it runs great.

Never had the engine open. Normal oil changes every 3 to 5 k miles and a new water pump, rad, and 2 alternators nover the years. The 3.9 is a great little engine if used and maintained properly. I went up to the 4.7 in my 01 quad cab for the increased towing ability, but I wouldn't shy away from a 3.9.

and whats amazing is that your 88 3.9 did all that with only 125 hp. I use to tow with mine and never had any trouble with it.

Whats wrong with the 3.9 not many posts are from quad cab owners. It may be a strong engine but it cant even get out of its own way.I have give myself alot of room when pulling out into traffic.Nothing like punching it and getting only hesitation to the point where it almost stalls.Looking for mods only has 6k.Dealer says thats normal for a truck as heavy as a quadcab with a small engine.Dodge should get smart and use the 3.7 ram engine in the quadcab.I am looking forward to trying to tow with it i hope it performs well.

well... if dodge put a 215 hp V6 in the dakota, they might have trouble selling the 230 hp V8 and 250 "RT"

Yeah thats true but dosent that suck that a V6 has almost as much power as the V8?I think that they need to boost up the power on all the V8s.I think they are concerned about what the average person needs.Thats why they put goveners and rev limiters on cars and trucks. My father in-law complains about the same thing he remembers the power of the old engines and wonders what happened with all the technology seems they are moving backwards. And i dont want to even hear about how emissions are the problem.

Intensedak-although the 3.7's 215 horsepower is somewhat close to the 4.7's 230 and the 5.9's 245 horsepower, its measly 235lbs of torque does not comapre to the 4.7's 295lbs of torque and is no where near the 5.9's 345lbs of torque. Come on now, don't try and spin things so that it appears if your puny V6 can compare to a real man's engine (a V8!). Let's compare the 3.7 to the 4.7 (identical engines by the way, the 3.7 is just missing 2 cylinders). 15 horsepower difference (which I admit is negligible) and 60lbs of torque difference which is a huge difference in power, especially in a truck. Sure Honda's 2.0 liter makes 240 horses, but put that thing in a quadcab dakota and you'll see just how important torque numbers are, with something like 150lbs of torque that little honda engine won't make the dak mover very fast at all even though its making 10 more horses then the 4.7

I am very happy with my 3.9 . It does everything I want it to do. The Bolt on Goodies improve the power somewhat and increase the gas mileage.Guess it depends on what you want your Dak to do.
