Subject: Need recommendation on a new air intake IP: Logged
Message: I have narrowed my choices to either the Volant, 360 Air Intakez or K&N Gen 2 (part 57-1516). The K&N seems to be more popular but the most expensive. Lowest price I can find on it is $260. It also seems to be more complex to install.

Message: Big Blue QC,
Yeah, it's a 2002 Quad with a 4.7 engine. Is there not much of performance difference when installing an air intake on a 4.7? What about mileage?

Message: I am by no means an expert at this. I have tried a few experiments on my truck with no improvements(had to do with air flow) I noticed worse mileage and loss of low end torque, which is a general finding of what other people found after installing a kit. I think this really only applies to the 4.7L, the whole engine as a whole is very efficient, thus the reason why it's harder to find aftermarket parts that really work. The 5.2 & 5.9, being older design smallblocks, usually respond quite well to mods such as this. If you do a search on this subject you will find some people here that have had luck with some of those aftermarket kits but just as many (or maybe more) realized they wasted their money. Below is some info a major intake manufacturer sent me when I asked about a system for my truck:
Unless you plan on doing in excess of 200mph you really don't do any measurable
"forcing" of air into the intake system. There is no difference in the
performance of either the front facing inlet as used on the 98-99 intakes or the
fender inlet of the 2000+ models. With the 98-99 version there aren't the AC
lines that get in the way, but for the 2000+ models you would have to contend
with getting through them to get out the front. Also, there is actually quite a
bit of airflow into the inner fender coming from back at the base of the
windshield which is also a high pressure area.
Please, do what you think is best. My advice is if the product you might choose doesn't have a money back guarantee, don't waste your money.

Message: I am actually satisfied with the horsepower and acceleration I get from the stock setup. But, you know what they always say, it's never enough for some people. I don't mind experimenting on my truck to see what works and what doesn't. Gotta learn from experience I guess.
