Subject: K&N Filters - (any downside?) IP: Logged
Message: I was telling a friend that a good cheap way to get a few extra horsepower and even improve your gas mileage slightly is to get a K&N filter.
He said he heard that they can be bad for your engine becuase they don't filter as thoroughly as a stock filter so they let more 'bad stuff' into your engine.
Is there any truth to this?

Message: You are going to get mixed opinions on this one. Though a lot of guys on this site use K&N ...... some people use them with good results, and no problems, others have mixed results. Personally, I used them in the past but I do not use them anymore. I have never had a vehicle that I used them on where I could tell a difference in horsepower. And the talk around my garage is that K&N is "a million holes traveling at 65mph". There was a magazine that did a test. I don't remember what magazine did this, but someone took a Grand Prix GTP and put a panel filter in. The car was dynoed with no horsepower gains. The car's acceleration, 0-60 and 1/4 mile were also tested with paper and then with a K&N with no improvement in horsepower. Same as my results. I guess it's just a matter of preference. Personally, I'd rather play it safe and keep excess dirt out of my engines.

Message: While talking to someone in the filter business (industrial/automotive/trucking) a couple of weeks ago I questioned the K&N system (due to all the talk of K&N on this site). He said they were better off just on race cars as the engines get torn down and inspected. They also need a higher unrestricted airflow than normal cars. He also mentioned that stock air filters get better filtration as time goes on. I'm scared to think now what 2 years with a K&N did to my truck, especially here in dusty Arizona.

Message: I look at many oil analysis results each year. I would highly recommend you or anyone running a K&N or other aftermarket air filter do an engine oil analysis to determine that the filter is indeed doing its job. I can easily spot a K&N equipped vehicle oil analysis results as in 90% of cases the filter keeps out stones and birds very effectively but little else. The #1 cause of reduced engine life is dirt. We need to make sure we have the best filter media, tightest induction system possible to ensure maximum engine life. If you look at a K&N filter you can see through the medium very easily. IMHO.

A lot of guys here use K&N. They think because their favorite driver uses them it is okay. Simple choice for the race car, it makes horsepower for them. They could probably run without a filter at all, just some chicken wire to keep out rocks and beer bottles, and they'd do just fine. They don't care if more dirt gets into their engines, as they rebuild their engines all the time. They simply want Maximum HP !!!
Those of us with daily drivers don't have that luxury. Remember ----- Dirt is such a silent killer!

Message: Hmmmmm. Glad i asked. I had never heard the other side of the story on the K&N filters.
Now let me ask this. Say your truck is lease and you know you're trading it back in in 3 or 4 years. If that was the case would you run a K&N filter? Could it cause engine damage that quickly or is it more of a long term thing?

Message: 120K miles on my '99 R/T Dak with about 115K of that with a K&N air filter. Tore the engine down afer I totaled the truck, and it looks pretty clean inside to me. Used Mobile 1 synthetic and either Mobile1 or K&N oil filters since the first oil change and changed oil every 3K. If the K&N really let in that much dirt to cause a problem, I couldn't see it on my engine. And the area I live in is extremely dusty for 85% of the year. Central San Juaquin Valley in Cali which has some of the worst air quality in the nation mostly due to the dry temps and constant farm work stiring up dust and chemicals in the air. Keep running the paper air filters if you ant, I'll stick to the K&N or equivelant.

Message: An air filter that you can see light thru would
seem to allow more dirt to pass than a unit designed to limit dirt to sub micron size.
How do you know when to change the oil on a K&N?
Does K&N state a minmum partical size?
One thing to remember here on Earth: Marketing is everything!! It doesn't matter if it's oil or
beer or tires. Why gamble for almost no HP
gain???? Maybe adding the 'tornado' do hickey
would double what the K&N gives and also sort out the dirt into a soup can before it enters the mill.

Message: For whatever it is worth I live in the same area as HSKR and
the air is very dirty here, I have run K&N filters on the last 4
vehicles I have owned and all have went over 100K. I work
on a farm where things are very dusty and all of our work
trucks run K&N just because a paper filter will only last
1,500 - 2000 miles before it get completely restricted.
Much easier to wash and re-oil than burn through filters
every few weeks. While we are running fords we have yet to
lose a motor and the grandaddy of the fleet is very tired
F250 with over 300K. Another note we have two ford
diesels with banks turbos and Banks equips all of thier
aftermarket kits with K&N filters, hardly a "race only"
application. Just my .02 on a real world application.

Message: with the K&N the dirter it gets the better it filters. up to a certain point.then you need to clean it. mine looks like it got the oil sucked out of it on one end. ain't much good if this is what is going on.

Message: The K&N FIPK kits for the Dakota/Durango is a proven modification that does significantly help over the stock set up. If K&N filters were as bad as some make them out to be, do you really think K&N woudl still be in business or as big as they are today??

Message: a year or so ago i think it was Car Craft that did a dyno and track test for all the major filters. I believe they used S&B, K&N, Holley, some other High Performance filter and a plain jane fram. During the tests, there were no more than like 5 hp difference and no track differences.
At the end of the article it stated that all the tests were with NEW filters and that the results would very a lot after they got dirty... saying that the regular paper filter would perform very poorly after a few hundred miles.

Message: All I can tell you is Ive had a 89 GMC sierra that went to my wifes son. I put a K&N filter on it when it had 40 000 miles. it currently has 300 000+ miles last I saw it and it still run s great and still has the K&N filter on it. I drive my trucks in all kinds of conditions. I got the K&n for the reusability. I look down the intake tract of the truck and I see NO dirt or dust in it.
I think it filters pretty well plus Im not buying 40$ worth of filters every year

Message: I have run K&N filters on every vehicle I have owned over the last twenty years, and have never seen any signs of dirt past the filter. As far as someone selling junk for years just look at Ford.

Message: I've run K&N filters for over 18 years. I put 190K miles on a '85 Dodge minivan 2.2, and 217K on a '92 Dakota 5.2. 54K on my current '01 Dak 4.7. All were drop-in type. Great gas mileage, great performance, predictable service. I'm sold.

Message: Recently I tore down the top end of my (100,000+mile)318 with open-element K&N filter. The engine looked brand new with no signs of sludge or build-ups any where. So I'll stick to the K&N filters...not for the advertised HUGE performance gains, but for a simple one-time investment that I can clean, rather than buy a new filter everytime it gets dirty.

Message: I've owned 2 K&N's and will not own a 3rd. I always found grit after the filter. No, not oil. No, they weren't over oiled. No, I didn't clean them too often and ruin them, I never cleaned them. One was on for approximately 30K, the other much less. That said, if I was racing and needed to screen out big stuff and wasn't worried about long-term durability, I'd run one. I can't argue with more flow in that situation.

Message: I have one in my 2000 QC 4.7 as well as 2 Honda Xr dirt bikes. I feel better trottle response, horspower gains are probably minimal. I like cleaning them only once a year (around 25,000 miles on Dakota per year).
The only trouble I had was with Autozone, they sold me a model which was for the 99. It had a thicker rubber edge but still fit (cover was snug). I thought it was supposed to be that way. I checked the filter after a few months and found a 1/4" long crack in the corner rubber next to the seal, with slight evidence of dust on the inside.
I checked the website and found a different part number listed. The first Autozone store would not cover it. Their computers still showed the wrong part number (probably still do). They said the million mile warantee is only through K&N direct.
The second store covered it (and ordered the right one) and they did a reverse search on the K&N part number in their computers and found it came back listing the Dodge Dakota. So they basically have two different part #s for the same vehicle but only the wrong one came up when doing a vehicle search.
I went back to the first store and bitched them out, they didn't care at all that their computer listed the wrong part.
By the way the new one was completely different with a thinner rubber seal, and a foam rubber gasket with adhesive backing to put into the airbox.
Check the K&N website for your part number, do not trust Autozone or substitute from a different year. The last time I went to Autozone, I didn't see K&N's anymore.

Message: Nothing beats an "oiled foam" or "oil Bath" air filtration setup.
K&N's do flow a lot of dust and that is why they sell pre-filters for use with their filters in dusty conditions.
