Subject: Fuel Pump / PCM Problem IP: Logged
Message: My 98 Dodge Dakota Sport failed to start one morning, even though it was turning over. I had it towed to a mechanic, who said the PCM was mulfunctioning and the truck had to be sent to the dealer for PCM replacement and reprogramming. I informed the dealer of the PCM diagnosis, and said that I believed it to be covered under my vehicle's extended warranty. The dealer serviceman called me back to say it was not the PCM but the fuel pump, which had to be replaced for a charge of $703. After replacing the fuel pump, I was then notified that the PCM was mulfunctioning, but would be replaced under warranty. The dealer has now had my truck for over two weeks. My question is, am I getting screwed? Can a malfunctioning PCM cause a faulty fuel pump diagnosis? What are the chances that both the PCM and the fuel pump would fail at exactly the same time?
