Message: There was a bit of gunk inside my throttle body so I shot it with a bit of NAPAs petroleum free carb cleaner. The plastic nozzle shot off and down into the intake maifold. Oops. I removed the throttle body(like I should have in the first place) and used long forceps to retrieve it. During this process the plastic lens fell off of my flashlight into the intake manifold and disappeared. I fished around and can not locate it. It is 1/2 inch in diameter and 1/16 inch thick and all plastic.
How big of a problem is this going to be?
Thanks,
Steve-It just keeps getting worse-Wright

Message: It could go right through or it could, more likely, hang up a valve and then you're in for big repair bills.
Try rigging up a vacuum cleaner with a piece of 1/2"ID rubber hose and use that to suck the lens out.

Message: Steve.... Baaaaad news bud.
Actually it's not that bad, deep well socket and long extension will take all the bolts off the Plenum (Intake assembly). This can be accomplished without removing the A/C compressor, Alternator, Distributor of Valve covers. If your Injector connections are not marked get strips of take and mark each 1 with the corresponding injector. If you can't find the lens in there than it should be easily accessible in top of the heads.
While you have it off this will be a good oppurtunity to see how clean the rods and lifters are. If you still can't locate the lense I hope it's not stuck in an Open valve, that could be VERY Bad!
Picture this Lense is sitting in the position waiting for the intake valve to open, it will nip off pieces of the lense and feed them into the combustion chamber where they are pressurized and then superheated by the combustion, on the exhaust stroke these pieces of superheated plastic are then fed into your exhaust valve where they would cool back into plastic chunks causing your Exhaust valve to stick open and then on the next stroke WHAM the piston slams into your stuck open valves. If all goes well the intake will chip it into small enough pieces it won't harden and stick to anything until it gets to your Cat converter, effectively blocking the screen entrance and costing about $250.00 to repair.
Go to O'Reilly's and pay the $19.95 for the intake gasket set which also comes with a seal for the pan on bottom of the Plenum, It's one of those "Since ya got it off" parts, this is likely where your Oil Sludge is coming from. there is a gasket on the bottom that becomes very brittle and is pressure sensative, when this gasket fails depending on the location it either 1) lets pressurized fuel drain into the oil on top of the engine OR 2) it creates a Vacuum pulling Oil from top of your engine back into your intake. Most people blame oil in thier intake to a Defective or Bad PCV Valve. Good time to change that also.
Whenever you have your plenum out and since you already have the Throttle body off, Get some Brake or Carb cleaner and an Old toothbrush and clean off all the Sludge and Oil. Your Engine will love you for it and increase your Gas mileage.
Good Luck!

Gasket set, Cleaner products, tube of Blue RTV, 9/16" socket, Extension, Ratchet and torque wrench. Check your torque recomendations, I'm not 100% but it's somewhere in the range of 15FtLbs. (Not very Much) 15ftlbs is about what your Oil Filter should be like. Snug all bolts equally then 3/4 turn each. Total time About 3-5hrs.

Message: Thanks for the great advice. It sounds like it might be worth spending a few minutes with the shop vac and try to get lucky(having used up a good deal of bad luck already). Then surgery if that fails.
Thanks again,
Steve

Message: Actually, the plastic is most likely a petroleum product and will most likely burn off (if it's in small enough pieces).
It needs to be found and removed, though :)~

Message: GET IT OUT!!!!! I had a buddy with a jeep, converted to a 350(chevy ugh)... but anyway, he had put rags in the intake and (while drunk).. decided to put the manifold back on. He turned the ignition and quickly realized he had left the rags in there. BIG F..IN mess.... I had to laugh. Don't make me have to laugh at you!!!!!

Message: Do you like to fish? I have a solution that just may work. These intakes have blind areas that cannot be seen with the throttle body removed and the fact that the lens is plastic rules out a magnet, but not all hope is lost. Take a magnet on a stick, bamboo skewer, or a piece of household wire long enough to reach down into the intake. Grab some duct tape and tape to one end of your improvised tool and wrap sticky side out several times ending in a 2-4 inch streamer. Start and probe one side then the other to pick up the lens. Life is too short to pull things apart when you don't have to. If no lens shows up double check around the intake unless you know for sure it fell in. The bottom of the intake is flat and it would require the engine to have been run to draw it in. If the carb cleaner removes the adhesive, retape and try again.

Message: about 25 years ago my father in law dropped the bolt from an air cleaner assembly down inside the manifold, then drove it for several days before taking it to a freind that tore it down clear to removing the heads to find the bolt. All the guy found was 3 small pcs. of obviously melted steel in one cylinder and NO INTERNAL DAMAGE. Just one man's experiance a long time ago.

then theres the fun times like setting fire to a piece of card board soaked with some diesl and shoving into the intake manifoild of a cold diesel to get it going..
any how get the plastic out if you can .

Message: After spending a couple of hours with the vacuum and duck tape on a wire, I sent it to my mechanic. Got it out just fine, but:
I just checked the oil and it is dark and opaque. I just changed it last week. I use Amsoil with a bypass filter, so it should be transpatent amber. It has to be coolant in the oil.
Now the question is:
Could this have been one big splash of coolant into the oil when the intake manifold was removed. or is something else going on?

Message: If oil and water was circulating in your motor, you should have some chocolate milk sludge. Amsoil is probably a little more detergent than regular oil and may appear darker. If in doubt, change it. Be sure to change the filer as scheduled
