Message: By the way, it only has 30k on the whole thing. It's all up the side like it came from the top almost. HMMMMM

Message: I thought about that, but I don't know how much torque it needs to be tight.
I made a special little plug remover with a short bolt and two nuts sandwiching a lock-washer for about 75 cents by the way. Just needs to be welded.
I'm pretty sure it's tight but i'll check.
Thanks Man

Message: Is the shifter handle "loose"? I had the top seal break on my 2000 at about 15k miles... Probbaly from hard shifting. but that caused the entire trans to be covered in oil.

Message: How loose do you mean, it's tighter than any other manual I've owned since it's almost new. BUT
I have loosened it(it unscrews at the base) before and retightened it back, but I didn't loosen it very far, maybe a half turn or so and then tightened it.
I thought about that seal, can you open it from the top by removing the shifter console and boot to check it???? What does it look like if it's blown?
Thanks a lot!

Message: Well for me I saw the fuild on the side of the case and brought it to the dealer. They disgnosed it as being the top seal and had to order the seal and fix it another day, when I got it back no more leak and the shifter felt tighter than it did when it went in... the shifter didn't feel loose but it felt tight when i got it back. I believe they did the entire operation from the top of the trans, going in through the interior / console and then sealing it back up and topping off the fluid...

Message: I had the same problem after changing my tranny fluid. It turns out I installed my shifter tower gasket upside down which cause it to puke oil out of the top of the tranny. I found out what i did wrong and just flipped the gasket over the right way and that fixed it.

Message: Mr. H,
Yes, you have to remove your console and trim to get access to the shifter tower.

Message: Well, I pulled out the console today which by the way sure is a nice one, removed the cover over the shift tower, and the seal was fine.
I guess I'll just check the fluid periodically to determine the prob. I sure cant afford another $1000 repair. That rear-end almost broke me.. $730 shipped, and I put it in!!! (I had to replace everything between the u-joint and the wheels!!!) It took about 6 hours to do with common jacks and a bud helpin. Those leaf springs are not fun to remove and replace!!! The preload in the shackles makes for a fun time.
I did notice that on the new rear-end I bought it came with larger drum brakes than the one I had on it. That was totally cool b/c it stops WAY better!! It must've been a towing package unit...
I didn't even think to get the one from a quad-cab with a 3:92 LSD and Disc Brakes!!! I kicked myself HARD for that one. I bet it even uses the same proportioning valve.. Either way, that would've been easy enough to swap out and a lot cheaper than a disc brake conversion AND a LSD with a set of gears.
Man that was stupid!!
Thanks for the help...
