Subject: Paint-in bedliners??? IP: Logged
Message: Just wondering if anybody out there has any experiences with the paint in bedliners specifically the hippo-liner.
Looks simple enough to do, any hints or suggestions if I decide to do it?
Thanks,
Fiend

Message: after looking at a few brands I picked rustoleums road warrior. Trusted name and MUCH cheaper than herculiner/rhino liner. That's not to say a profesh' job is much better, rhino liners are very nice but I can think of a bunch of better ways to spend 300+ bones.
Look on ebay for road warrior, some other crap will come up but you'll see the product. I got mine for 33 bucks shipped, maybe 35 I forget. Anyhow, I'll have it this week and plan to put it on next weekend. I'll come back and post the results good or bad.

Message: I used Herculiner. You have to scuff the heck outof the paint to get it to stick. It adheres great as long as you scuff it really well. After two years 95% of mine is still in place. You see patchs though that I must not have scuffed well enough. I am going to recoat with what I had left over next weekend. I think I paid $48 at Sams club for mine 2 years ago. They rock put they are not as durable as the sprayed in liners. Nissan is putting a sprayed on liner ito their new full size Tittan Truck. So while they are expensive if an OEM is going to warranty a spray on liner that says it all right their!

Message: Why not just use the truck without a liner until it gets scratched up, and then install your favorite liner?

Message: That's what I am doing... Hauled 1500 pounds of that retaining wall block and it scratched the heck out of my 1200 mile bed... OH WELL... roll-in bedliner will come this summer. I had the dupli-color one in my last truck and it held up pretty well...

Message: Dude by the time youre done you invest lets say 100$ in a liner thats basically about 2 mm thick if that. also what is your time worth? Spray on bedliners are affordable have a lifetime warranty and protect a heck of a lot better than roll on products. Heck you can get a drop in liner that will outlast the roll on 50;1 for about the same price. I would do that before I sand my bed down and install a inferior product. id rather have a plastic liner than soem cheezy thin black paint protecting my bed
also just FYI most of the spray on bedliner material will not stick to the roll on material. just in case you decide to spray on your truck later you will have to grind/sand off your bed.

Message: I can say that being a homeowner not a contractor my bed does not see too much duty, my old truck had the roll-in for almsot 2.5 years at which time it moved me into my house, hauled at least a dozen loads of loam / gravel / sand, had 400# of cast iron in it in the winter plus quite a few trips to home deopt for wood and brick, and I only managed to chip it off in a couple places where I DENTED the bed floor. So I do have a lot of confindence in this stuff. I plan on doing 4 coats in this truck as opposed to the 2 I did in my last one... So say what you will but I will definitely use this stuff again.
... and the reason I did this was the POS plastic bedliner the dealer gave me always had stuff sliding around and rubbed the paint off the sides of my bed (upper quarters) as well as on most of the bed floor allowing it to surface rust...

Message: Yeah I'm in the same boat chris, my dodge plastic liner rubs paint off and things slide around a bunch. I don't use the bed for construction duty or anything so the roll-on will be fine I'm sure. I only want something that grips, prevents rust, and will last a few years with light duty. For 35 bucks I'm pretty positive the rustoleum road warrior will have me covered. Then again I have a 13-14k truck .. not a 30k new quad cab, if that were the case I would maybe spring for the rhino liner.
It's all preference, I'm sure the guys with the tougher more expensive longer lasting stuff love it, I just cant afford it right now so roll-on seems to be a great alternative, especially for my needs.

Message: what if it was an 18K used quad cab 4.7 still use the roll-on? I would have the time and think $40 - $50 would be much better then $400, I Think my time is worth it.

Message: I have not worn any of it off through work or friction..... Te only areas it has gotten a bit thin are the areas I did not scuff well enough that is my fault not the products. Nothing slides around at all in my bed. If I want to I can still put a hard bed liner in if I want to. If you put a 1/8-1/4 inch spray on liner in you will not be able to put a hard liner in.

Message: Do it right and take it to LineX. The difference it amazing. The material is harder and thicker. Plus it's guaranteed and you won't ever have to worry about re applying.

Message: I don't want the sprayed in stuff. It's expensive, it adds alot of weight to your truck - reduces gas mileage, I don't haul much mostly just commute with it. It i were hauling rocks yea. but then I would have a dump truck. Roll on is fine. then bedliner if I want it.

Message: Dude it doesnt add anymore weight than a drop in liner does. in fact its probably less. you can get your truck done for as little as 300$ if you look around. thats mabey 40-50$ more than you were to spend on the roll on stuff and a plastic liner. its not like it adds 200 pounds to the truck and your gas mileage wont be any different
anyway Im not trying to tell you what to do but there is a lot of misinformation out there about spray on bedliners

Message: Rob I got a kit of rustoleum road warrior for 30 bucks, (check this out) my kit is sitting here waiting to go on. On the outside of the box is a square sample of the material when dried and it's very thick and tough. They throw in recycled tires so even if you went with the most expensive roll-on it's still at least 200 cheaper. Like I said before, the more expensive stuff has to be better I've seen it and it looks/feels damn near bullet-proof so yaaay if you want the best get the 300+ buck professional job done, if your tight on funds, have the time and want something durable that you MAY have to re-coat in 2-3 years and just as good looking go with a roll-on.
Speaking of looking good, the last rhino application I saw was faded a bit it looked somewhat misty dark gray.. this stuff I got from rustoleum is guaranteed not to fade so thats cool.

Message: I believe that "drop in" vs. "spray on" should be a matter of what your specific needs are. I used to work for an auto parts store and would drive all over town to pick up parts. I found that during cornering or braking, small heavy parts (a/c compressors, brake rotors, water pumps, etc.) would slide across the bed, and leave small dents (pock marks) in the exterior of the truck bed. It wasn't my truck, I didn't give a S$#% if it got dented, My point is, if you use your Dakota to race around town, and occasionally pick up pine straw, wood chips, or building materials, spray on will suffice. But if you are prone to hauling things like landscaping blocks, fire wood, or scrap metal, you will be better off with a plastic drop in liner.
P.S. I have a "drop in" plastic liner.
