Subject: Tranny in new murano... IP: Logged
Message: have any of you heard anyting about this tranny. i was checking this thing out on carsdirect.com and it says it is 1-speed. I went and asked a guy about it at the dealer down the street and he said some crap i have never heard before about a tranny and that it shifts 100% smoothly, you will never feel it jerk when either up or down shifting. Anyone know how this new tranny works?

Message: Well I was told that the new transmission works with pullies and belts. My friend drove one at the dealership and said that it does have variables of that one gear. You can hear the belt or pulley change alot more than you can feel it.

Message: CVT: continually variable transmission.
front and rear pullies can change sizes indefinately, so there's an infinate number of gear ratios. If you put it to the floor, it will put the engine at the optimum RPM and then keep it there, while constantly increasing speed.
It's pretty high-tech, and supposedly very durable. When adapted to a high-powered vehicle, I think we're going to be rethinking our ideas of what "fast" 0-60 and 1/4 times are.

Message: yup NDakota nailed it right on the head..... though they aren't new per say, they have been arouns since the late 50's(i beleive mercedes actually invented them), but no one had even thought of the automotive use's for them, they were mainly designed for industrial purposes, but now, well i guees were gonna see what happens when you put 300-600 hp to them as there is big talk of using them in all kinds of professional racing..........

Message: Continuously Variable Transmission
Invented by DAF, a dutch car maker, has been around for decades and commonly used in snowmobiles. However, it's use was restricted to small, low powered motors and finding a way to smoothly transfer power between engine and transmission has also been a challenge.

Message: My Rupp minibike, tecumseh 4 hp engine, had a TC-1, it was a variable speed torque converter, in the 70's. So, no, the theory isn't new.
LMAO, Craig, 'can you use them with stick shifts?'
-that's funny
stick, and stick shifts, ya mean a manual transmission, right?

Message: Belt durability is still the key issue and power limiting factor. The belt is really kind of cool looking. It is made of pricey alloy materials and one link over rides the other pushing the belt around the pulleys to transfer power. THe trany fluid is green in color. If ever they can make them durable then a new world of fuel efficent monster SUV's could be born!!!
