FYI -- PCM is covered 8/80 Federal emissions warranty

And-
If your warranty ran out 2K ago; DC might provide some assistance w/ repairs.

You fried your PCM...the light will never go away. You have to replace your whole PCM. Had this code last year and the dealer said the only thing it said in his book was to replace the entire PCM.

I got this code by not unplugging the battery when I reconnected my PCM so it sent a spike through it frying a circuit.

Mike D is correct.
The 2001 Diagnostic manual states this.
P0601-PCM internal controller failure

Possible Causes-
Powertrain Control Module

Note: This DTC indicates an internal PCM problem.
If no other possible causes remaining, view repair.

Repair:
Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module
in accordance with Service information.

where do I get thins inforamtion on the 8/80 emmisions warranty?? Never heard of it before. Don't you think if the PCM was "fried" the engine would not run correctly? My engine is running fine, my gas milage is good. Called Dodge today and he said it was not covered under warranty, 80.00 to diagnose (as if I don't already know the diagnosis) 300.00 for a PCM and and another 100.00 to have it flashed. I think I might just have to enjoy the pretty colors on my dash for a while. Unless one of you can send me $500, hahaha! Sorry, got to laugh or I'll cry!

Yeah mine ran fine too, all the guages worked ran smooth as it always did. But something in the PCM was fried whether it affected the driveability or not, but if you ever take it to get inspected it'll never pass cuz that code will remain there until you replace it.

Don't bother spending the $80 to have it diagnosed, he's just gonna tell you the same thing the dealership I went to researched on, they'll just tell you to replace the PCM.

2001RT ... P0601 means that a serial communication failed inside the computer at least 6 times. Diagnostic is long, complicated process. It involves first checking all power and grounds to the pcm, including fuses. Next is to do a continuity check of all input and output lines from the pcm to the respective components. Finally, a check for any shorted ouput devices. With this code, all monitoring by the pcm is suspended. Good luck!

Actually, according to the 2001 Powertrain Daignostic Procedures manual, the diagnostic is very short, one of the shortest in the book and is described in full detail in my previous posting.

Thanks Guys, I appreciate the info from the manual, however, I did have to change some of the wording.

Repair:
Take wrench remove PCM, remove fuel injection, replace with good old fashioned carburator, go do a dounut in the dealership parking lot.

Not covered ...WTF?
IP: Logged

Message:
Check your "warranty information" booklet, it is a supplement to your owner's manual.

For my 2000 Dakota, the catalytic converter and PCM are covered by 8/80 Federal Emission Warranty

If the vehicle has California emission and is registered in California,Massachusetts,or Vermont;
additional parts are covered by a 7/70 warranty: fuel pump, fuel tank, intake manifold, TCM.

The dealer will require you to OK diagnostic charge (check out time) This is to cover their costs in the event your problem is not covered by warranty. If the PCM is found defective and covered by warranty, there should be NO cost to you. NO parts NO labor NO checkout charge NO shop supplies. NO big DC logo pumping in and out of your butthole ... this time

I've had this error for about 67K miles now, my durango is at 127K miles. No problems with engine, gas mileage is still the same, even with 22" wheels; not gonna give the dealer $537.00 unless something starts going wrong, save your money guys

Yeah I've been running my dakota for about a month with the light on and no problems except that I have to get my car inspected. It won't pass until the problem is fixed and I'm over 80,000 miles. So this is coming out of my pocket. Can I fix this myself or does the dealer have to do it? I've read that it's a simple plug in module and then I've read it's an install and software install that only the dealer can do. Anyone know if it can be done by the owner?
