Subject: 123,000 miles? IP: Logged
Message: I've given my son my 96 Chevy S10 and have been looking in the Dallas (Tx) area for a Dakota. Not many used available I have found a very clean 1994 Club Cab V6 with a lot of extras. But it's got 123,000 miles on it and that mileage makes me very, very nervous. I have been reading this excellent board for about 4 hours this afternoon trying to learn about Dakotas and have read a post from a guy who says he put 247,000 miles on his first engine.
Anyone else out there who has had a good or bad experience with a high mileage Dakota? Sure would appreciate some answers. Got to make up my mind fairly quickly. Thanks.

| Opps, more info re: 123,000 miles IP: Logged
Message: Opps. Should have mentioned that, according to the owner (who, of course, is trying to sell it) he has installed a new radiator, a rebuilt water pump, new fuel pump, starter and cataletic converter in the truck since he's owned it (bought it new) and has had the auto transmission rebuilt.
He's asking $4,900.

Message: I have a '94 ext. cab V6 5-speed with just over 175,000 miles on it. I have replaced the fuel pump, the radiator, and most recently the right front ball joints. In my never-to-be-humble opinion, that says alot for mopar quality. I take good care of it, and I don't hot-rod around in it either. Also, the truck is still on it's first clutch!

Message: Mike i have a 5.9 and its in the same catagory. I have over 200000 and it feels like it runs better every day. My experience with dodge and high milage has been excellant.
There are bad engines that die at about 100000 and there are the ones that last forever. The truth is that 123000 Miles isnt that much for a truck I have seen many engines triple that. Friend owns a slant 6 with million miles on it. So i think its a safe bet that this engine will serve you a long time. But i wouldnt be worried about a chrysler engine thats the last thing to go. Check the tranny and body. Feel how the tranny shifts any hard shifting could be a sign of misuse. But as far as 123000 goes it just broke in its still a baby.

Message: its best you don't since you claim all the race teams pour out their brand of oil and pour in Castrol to use in their engines..would that be Jeremy Mayfield and Rusty Wallace too? I am sure they are lying about using Mobil One in their machines...so, if you drive 205,000 miles in two years, that is about 2000 miles a WEEK..so you change your oil, what THREE times a month, unless of course since Castrol is so superior, (NOT according to Consumer Reports..but they don't know as much as you)..you only change it twice a month?

Message: I never said castrol was so superior i say it was better. Theres proof of that on the durango board were some one posted the oil test results.
Rusty wallace and jeremy mayfeild are good drivers but there not winning races. Because there machine is not getting the lubrication it needs to get by all of the castrol cars. I bet most nascar teams are using amsoil with wixs filters.
I never claimed i know more then consumer reports i just ment that there are better tests to prove what oil is best.
And what the hell is wrong with your math. 205000 in two years is very posible. i cross canada about 8 times a year. Drive to florida and back and every local trip i take is about 70 miles. You should know that 205000 you live in a place were transport trucks out number cars and each one of those trucks do more then 205000 in two years. So do the math and shut up
And no i dont change my oil 3 times a month because castrol is just that damm good.

Message: i just picked up a '94 dak sport w/ 5.2 V8, 156,000 miles on it... it is in really good shape, and i haven't had any really probs with it in the few weeks i've owned it. so, if it seems ok (check it out thouroughly, take it to a shop if you don't know a ton yourself) i'd say go for it... case in point... i had a car that i got with 180,000 on it, and never did a thing to it, then got rid of it at 230,000... my friend bought a '01 ranger, ball joint dropped out at 700 miles, causing damage to wheel, shock, tire, etc. so, anything could happen at any time, is basically the point i'm making. go for it, and good luck!

Message: I traded in a Ford ranger w/206,457 on it using Castrol GTX 10w-30 every 3,000. Made a ford last that long the oil can't be that bad. Think what it will do for the Dodoge. I run them till the wheels fall off.
