Subject: A/C compressor IP: Logged
Message: My wife bought a 2000 Dak. Sport, 4 banger, used with 12000 miles. She bought it in 2001, and since then has replaced the A/C compressor 4 times. It is awaiting it's 5th one now. Each time, the A/C has made a serious grinding noise. Each time they have had to replace the serpentine belt and each time it has cost $1000.00 and a little over. I have researched and inquired but no one at any Dodge dealership has heard of that happening. Did she bye a LEMON.

Message: she didn't buy a lemon. my '00 has 90k on it and the a/c blows ice cold and i've never touched it.
may ask a question? has all this a/c work been done by the same person with the same brand components? if the answer is yes to either, there is your problem.

Message: Perhaps I was not clear enough. Each time the compressor goes out. It feezes up and burns the belt. One time it nearly burned the engine up. Each compressor has been new at replacement, each at a different location, due to where she was when it froze up. In each case the truck was down for a minimum of a week, waiting for parts. There has been no pre warning of it going out. I starts grinding and then in a few moments it freezes up. I was with her this last time and it surprised me as to how quick it happened.

Message: Are you running the A/C more than 'needed' ?
One possibility is that you have it on MAX
but the fan on low ?
If you need the A/C , run the fan higher..
It still should not have blown things up like that
but this may help things a little .
Only other thing is that they are slightly overcharging the refridgerant ( putting too much)

Message: Folks: The A/C has been on and off in every position you can imagine. It has not made a specific difference. The Compressor starts to grind then freezes up. Each time the Serpentine belt has to be replaced. I have not looked at a belt that has been replaced, but it appears to me that there may be a mis alignment problem. That is my theory, but I can not get Dodge to check that out, the time we have taken the truck to a Dodge dealer.

Message: Just my opinion, I had mine tweaked [add a/c] The round tensioner had the bearings burned out. I assume they had misaligned things the day b4. It cost me a $50.00 tow charge + $$$ to get it back the next day because they said it was my fault..
Also once again, I had it in for a recharge. Needed to replace the entire compressor.
$$$$.$$.
I suppose if I could use generic parts and find a better mechanic I would.
