Subject: 2001 Dak QD. 4x4 4.7L Engine Failure
IP: Logged

Message:
OK, before I start this thread, I had oil pressure when it blew and I had changed the oil less than 5k miles ago.
2001 Dakota Quad 4x4 / 4.7L auto 67K miles

It happened on my way to work - only got a mile from the house. The engine was still cold. Outside temp about 40. Started fine - no noise. first hill the engine just stopped. The dash lights came on "Check Guages" Duh!

The engine was frozen - locked-up tight. So, after the $50 tow, my mech. called me and said, in a somewhat sarcastic voice, "You ever change the engine oil in this thing 'cause you're going to need a new one."

Needless to say I was shocked! He said the oil looked like sludge coming out of it! I told him it only had 4k miles on it and it was checked a month ago.

Well, to make a long story short, this is going to cost me about $3K before it's all over for the new engine.

After looking at some of the history of the Durango motors, sludge blocking the oil intakes is a big problem! Many motors destroyed due to this.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

This is one of the biggest reasons to run full synthetic oil. I have been running Amsoil for the last 40k and change filters every 8k and oil at 16k. I have an oil analysis done at every filter and oil change and all reports have been safe. I believe that full synthetic is the way to go. Sorry to hear about your motor though.

The 4.7 liter engine does have a history of premature failure due to a weak oiling system (much like the 2.7 liter V-6 Dodge engine). BUT, these failures are very, VERY rare when routine oil and filter services are performed at 3000 mile intervals using the oil recommended in the Owner's Manual. Synthetic oils may be a solution, but are not at all necessary for the typical owner.
The older 5.2/5.9 V-8 engines were tagged with a similar complaint, but in most cases, the failures were due to ignoring an intake gasket leak that caused oil to be pulled into the intake and burned, never dripping on the ground. the classic symptom (commonly ignored) is unexplained oil loss.

I'm sorry to hear about your engine problem, but in all honesty 5k miles between oil changes is way to much for any engine.
I know the owners manuals claim in some cases 7K miles between changes but 99% of the people don't meet the driving conditions to ever go that far between changes. You should be changing the oil every 3000 miles at the most and if you have extended idling conditions, extended dusty driving conditions or most of your travel distance between starts is under 10 miles then the oil should be changed every 2000 miles.
This should be done for any engine. Sure some engines are more tolerant to extended oil changes than others but it hard to know in advance which ones will last and which ones won't.

Now a days engines are using piston rings with lighter pressure against the cylider walls to reduce friction and increase fuel mileage and performance but the lighter pressure piston rings don't seal as well and the oil gets more junk in it from air entering the combustion chamber and the combustion itself.
So using a good quality oil and changing it regularly....every 3k or sooner...is a must now a days.

So I would use this as a learning experience and change the oil more frequently and I would guess you'll never have this problem again.

boy these stories sound alot like mine - has anyone out there had the oil / sludge problem with their ram 1500 with the v6 or v8 ? i have a 2002 dodge 1500 with the 3.7 v6. on my way to work one morning the engine rpms shot up and the engine died out and would not restart. i got a tow to the nearest dodge service center and explained the situation. the service advisor told me that they would turn the whole thing over to the extended warranty folks. they never contacted me at all. i had to call back to the dealership and the service advisor told me that there wasn't any oil in the engine and that they wouldn't cover anything nor would the warranty people . i got in dirrect contact with the extended warranty inspector and the first thing they threw at me was that the warranty was void do to the fact that it was a commercial vehical( i was self employed ). i pulled out the warranty guidelines and emergency vehicales, 4 wheel drive, and a whole list of other vehical were under this exclusion, but not commercial vehicals. also the inspector told me that the truck warranty was void due to lack of matainance ( i could not prove the oil changes were Done ) they didn't open the engine to examine it exect removing the oil pan. so i had to eat it. i paid for a new engine out of my own pocket and lost the business due to not having the truck to do business. the mechanic who replace the engine checked it out first to see how bad it was. he told me that there was oil in the engine but it was sludge up in the engine and the screen intake in the oil pan was clauged up. this would explain gauges reading normal till the end. since then i've begun checking with an attorney and the web sites and found many makes and models of dodge vehicles that are going through the same thing . the biggest disappointment is that a company that makes billions of dollars is willing to try to worm out of replacing anything as fast as they can. ANY ONE OUT THERE KNOW OF 3.7 V6 ENGINE FAILURES . LET ME KNOW AT "SGT.ROCK@ROCK.COM " i would like to say this not all dodge products are bad , i've owned two other new dodge vehicles before and never had any problems . but this truck has been a nightmare.and it seems i'm not alone. i wish luck to all who have to deal with such a new car disapointment!

Hello to all, since i first posted there have been a number of people who have posted. Thanks!!! i wanted to put an update. first , my consult with a lawyer was a dead end for me . he told me my situation was to be a long draw out one. the engine price was $3350 + the lost business. his up front retainer was $5000. he told me that if it went to court it could be up to 2 years and a total of between $12,000 and $15,000 out of my pocket. then he let me know that a jury could award the price of the engine only and no legal fees. A REAL GAMBLE !!! so chrysler really knows what they are doing when they deny your claims.they gamble that you will just give up because most people won't spend that kind of time or money to recover from them. i've also done alot of research and found about 5 different makes/models that crysler produced that are involved in class action law suits for the same "engine sludge" problems. But you still have a voice. chose different when you buy!!! if crysler/dodge wants to screw the customers then shop elsewhere!! i've become the branch / operations manager for my company and moved to california to help expand. my opinion was the major force in our truck purchase. our company purchased 21 new " FORD " trucks. So you still count as a consumer. buy elsewhere!!! show dodge that they won't get repeat business!!! I'm so mad that i'd love to see them go bankrupt!!!

I've owned a 93 dodge dakota traded it for a 2003 dodge dakota which I traded for a 2003 dodge durango with a 4.7 after having a kid. I've had absolutly no major problems with any of these three vehicles except I had to change the motor in the 93 after driving through deep water, injesting water and breaking two rods. Sorry about your luck Tony, but my 4.7 has worked fine for the last 63k miles with "when I get around to it" type maintance the whole time.
I'd have to double check but I believe the 4.7 is supposed to be getting 5w30 oil, so if your changing you oil close to 3k and using a good quality filter there shouldn't be a sludging problem like this in any motor.

In thinking about the sludge in all of the failed engines one cause could be engine coolant had got into the oil pan somehow. Blown head gasket, warped head? I have 109,000 miles on my 4x4 2000 and it runs as new. I use 100% synthetic every 3k. Oil is a cheap extended warranty. The only issue I've had with the truck is disk brake rotors.

I have a 2001 dakota. It has 86k and I change the oil every 3k miles. I just had the oil changed last week at the dealer. My wife took, roughly a 800 mile trip in my truck and half way through she said it started making a ticking noise in the motor. Anyhow, when she got home it sounded like a piston was hitting the head, very loud at idle? Listening to it at idle with the hood open it sounds like maybe a valve or rocker is really loose, but you still hear it under the motor? The motor still runs smooth, and no idiot lights came on.Has anyone had this problem or know what it could be, other than letting my wife take your truck on a trip?

valve seats worn? Retorquing the rocker arms might help providing that nothing is actually cracked or broken. Sound may also be coming from water pump? Just throwing out trouble shooting ideas without actually hearing it myself. I have noticed ticking all the time in both dakotas I owned but if it has noticable increased, your truck may need some TLC.

Hi all; does it make sense at all to use on of these sludge-flushing additives when changing oil - at lest for those of us who change their oil themselves? I just bought a 01 Dakota 4x4 4.7 4-dr (4's everywhere...) and I'm about to change the oil. I was once told that these sludge removers could remove buildups behind the piston rings which risked creating leaks there... anyone know about this?
I've previously owned two F150s and one Datsun truck, always used sludge-removing additives and ran all 3 verhicles to over 200k without a problem.
Thanks and many safe miles to all.
Nicolai

years ago they used to say change oil every 10-12k.today 3k is recommendedbut to be honest w/ya 5k should be ok unless you are doing some heavy towing like pulling your house. did you notice that 3k recommendation came about around the same time these quick lube places started popping up and the auto manufactures followed suit.

I own a 2003 durango sxt with the 4.7l engine and here is the thing about sludge in any engine it has to do with a little thing called paraphin wax which is in most of your cheaper oils and it causes sludge build up in alot of engines. I had a intrepid with a 2.7l and I had to put $800.00 into it to clean up the sludge problem. Because I used to take my vehicle to most any oil change places which sell Quaker State aka Quicker sludge. I have 56000 miles on my durango and I change the oil every 3000 miles and I use only valvoline oils. Another big problem is constantly switching oils to a bunch of brand try sticking to one kind. This is the first time I have heard any problems with the 4.7l engines I will keep an eye on mine.

I have a 4.7 2000 Dodge Durango which has a blown head gasket.
I have heard mixed reviews if the 4.7's have problems with their
gaskets it has got 90000 miles on it and I wrecked into a freeway
barrier going 35 mph after hitting black ice. I hit the front left
corner of the vehicle however the insurance company says that
there is no way that the head gasket was dammaged in the wreck.
I don't know what to think any feedback is appreciated.
