My 2000 model recently sprung a leak along the back window seal, it was leaking so bad it filled the plastic tray under the rear seat with water every time we go at least 1/4 inch of rain. I just sealed it with some black silicon caulk, but yes, Dodge seems to be rather shoody. To be honest, with all the problems I have been having with this truck (Dodge dak #2) along with the prices of gas, I am probbibly going to be trading this truck in for a Honda or Toyota, they last alot longer, and they get better gas milage.

Hello,
I had this problem with a different truck. It happened when ever I used the AC. Turned out to be a clogged AC drain hose. The condensated water would fill up in the duct work and when I would make a turn it would slosh out into the Passenger floor.

We had this problem in my kids 1996 Dakota. We ruled out the A/C unit because it was only wet where the passenger puts his feet. So we pulled out the carpet, kick panel etc. We used a pressure washer and tested the cowl area and front corner of the windshield, nothing. Then we did the same thing at the corner of the rear window. BINGO! We removed the passenger seat belt cover and disconnected the speaker and removed the yellow styrofoam material to get a better look. There's a seam right there below the rear window. That's where the water was coming in. It runs down along the seam to the floor and channels right to the passenger floor board. We used clear silicone on the inside and outside to seal it. I also drilled a drain hole in the channel area to be on the safe side. So far so good. No leak!

Hondo Hall, I'm glad you found the source of your leak. I did the same thing you did and to this day I have a dry floorboard.

All,
I had a similar problem with my 2002. During the summer of 2003. This all happened while I was on leave (vacation). I lived in Cali but was visiting Mississippi and Georgia during the summer. Hot and humid! We had to left Miss up to Georgia and I noticed my passenger foorboard was soaked. I was like, WTF! I talked to a guy and he suggested the AC drain hose. I took it to a dealer, they cleaned it or atleast said they did. Got back on the road to Mississippi, bam! Same thing, wet floor (soaking) Next morning I took to a different dealership in Gulfport, talked to the manager told him the situation. They did some research and found that I needed a modification. I am not too mechanic saavy but this is what I understood needed to get done, maybe?? They had to make a drain for some sort of condensation collecting box/ bucket. The air in Cali was never as humid so the container never overflowed, but in the dirty south it is a lot more humid. true story! honest to goodness.

I live in ohio. I noticed roughly two inches of water in my passenger side floorboard. I called the dealer to see what was going on. The dealer said it may cost roughly $150 to fix. I guess i will try to fix the problem myself. Well see if this fixes it or not. It sure does piss you off when you pay so much for a vehicle and you have to do your own work, or deal with problems.

After our heavy rains here in northern california I noticed my inside windows was fogged upped. I checked to see if the heater core again had failed, but it hadn't. A week later I checked out what I could and found that the carpet under the jack on the side window side is soaked with water. Going back to Ed, Hondo Hall, Lancer, chandler, wetfoot2, and Relf I found that water in the front passenger side (that I don't have yet) can come from the rear. What can I do to check where the water is coming in from, and how do I remove all of the rear seat area to check? I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota Sport P/U. Thanks for any information.

Ernie, it's not too hard to remove your rear seats. I have a '98, I'm sure the seats are similar if not the same. I believe I removed the velour back pad first. I'm not sure, but if you look around for fasteners you could make sense of how it goes together. I think the back pad is held together by those plastic snap fasteners that you pry off with a screwdriver. I remember I removed the seat assembly with the hinges that are fastened to the back wall of the truck. I'll bet your leak is exactly like mine. I live in Pleasanton Cal. Where do you live?

Relf - thank you for pin pointing where to look and from hondo hall and your notes above it does seem to be the location as that is the wet area.
I live in Novato. So with the rain that is expected and no indoor work area I have to work outside. My single car garage, like others, is cluttered with other item. Thanks again. Ernie

I had a bad issue with a water leak not to long ago. A month after buying my truck I went to a car wash after getting out I noticed my passenger side just soaked. I took it to the dealership and they said they would fix the issue well 7 weeks 3 rental's cars and 5 visits back and fourth the damn thing was fixed. Seems there was a leak coming in the mirror on the door some kind of collection bin for the windshield and the door seals. I love my Dakota but for a 02 to have that many issues I think is a problem dodge needs to address.

I also live in Northern Cali and had the back window leaking I replaced the back window and now it's fine no more water. After reading all of your posts and several other about various leaky windows I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA. And I think you all should too because the more of us that complain the more likely it will be recalled and the more chance we have of getting reimbured the funds we had to spend to get it fixed.

Brandee - I have a couple questions. 1) did you replace both the rear window and the seal, or 2) replace the seal and reused the original window pane? I ask this because I still haven't found out how to remove all of the rear seat area even with the help of the above posts to check for leaks yet I did find that on the outside rear window on the passenger side I had a buildup of dedris in the upper left corner. I did scrap it out, or at least what I could so I did question if the seal was leaking.
Next I would be happy to file a complaint with the NSTSA but I thought that they only delt with safety matters. Please fill me in on the areas that i missed. Thank you. Ernie

Ernie when I ripped everything out of my backseat I had to remove the seat-belt bolts, pry off the back of the back seat (it takes some force but there are no screws) remove the screw that is now uncovered for the side panel and pop both of those off, you don't need to actually remove the back seat because there is an area between the side panel and the seat. Also I would suggest taking your carpet out so it doesn't mold. Now you should be able to see the seal that runs down the cab. Water is most likely getting in there, running along the door and pooling up on the front floor.

As for my window I had always wanted a slider so I took this as a chance to change that so I had the entire window replaced seals and all. That way the window people gave me a warrenty because the dealer said they could take the old window out but it will probably break and then because they would just have a glass person come to them they weren't going to cover it, so I just went to my own glass people and had it replaced (yes it did break when the took the old one out).

And the NHFSA deals with anything that deals with public safety. That is how wierd things end up being recalled and I am truely amazed this issue hasn't been yet because it seems everyone I know with a dakota has had this problem. Hope this helps.

I own a 2004 Dakota. We have not had rain here in Florida for months but this Am I found my passenger's side floor under the mat soaked. I suspect an A/C drain is plugged but without a "lift" I could not find the drain hose. Can anyone tell me where the drain hose is and what is the easiest way to make sure that it is clean and not obstructed? I appreciate any help.

Scott- If it is anywhere near where it is located on the 03 model.
You will be able to find it on the passenger side of the firewall
(obviously) behind a metal heat shield that is slipped over two long
bolts. It is pretty tight navigation to get up to it. On mine the
shield comes off pretty easily but the drain tube is much further up.

I have an 03 Quad Cab. The leak is definitely from the AC.
Sitting on level ground at an idle I have no problems, but as
soon I start moving down the road I can see a steady trickle
coming from up around the firewall. And like many others it is
not hard to quickly accumulate 1/2 gallon or more in the
padding. I am leaving on a trip in 2 days and would like to get
this solved as there is no way my fam will survive driving
through Oklahoma in July with no AC.

I have seen that on the O2s it seems adding a 90 elbow will help
does anyone know if that will help on an 03? Also where should
I go to get that part- Auto Zone, O'Reileys, etc or my local
dealer.

I have tried cleaning the drain tube and have found no
blockages. I have run water (with a garden hose) into the
condensing unit through the access hole and it has come
flooding out the drain tube just fine.

Is there another problem that I should be aware of? I know this
is not rain related at all.

Another problem I have run into with these trucks in the passanger rockers panel(on two different trucks) had the drain holes plugged up with factory seam sealer. When it would rain the water would run off the roof down the windshield and down the cowl just like it is supposed to. Well on these two models the right rocker panel would act like a holding tank until the water it got so full that it it would literaly run out the A piller/ kickpanel area in the interior. The first customer was a wreck he dealt with this for 4 years and had it into about 5 different shops and spent about 2000 in labor charges with no result. I really felt bad for the guy his carpet was shot and even some of the wires were corroding. Anyway the hardest part we had with the truck was he brought it to us when it was bone dry and it done several hours of looking until the rocker filled up and spilled over into the interior. Eventually there was a pinhole leak in the seam sealer drain plug so it would drain by itself but but any moderate rain would come in faster than it could rid it. I read this and thought of it. If anyone runs int this situation(and its not the glass, had to do several of these myself) take a look at the rocker drainage system. I would have to think there is more than just 2 of this type of blems out there.

I think I have it fixed or at least have stemmed the flow. I went to
O'Reilley's and after several failed attempts found some preformed
tubing. I wasn't sure if the tubing would fit over the drain so I
heated it in boiling water for 30 seconds and sprayed it with a
lubricant and it slid right on. It was a ninety degree elbow rubber
hose (radiator-like). I had to trim down the neck a bit. I can no
longer accommodate the heat shield though. I also felt around the
drain while I was up there and an inch or more around it is just
foam. I have no idea what is behind it but if that is all it is then it
makes sense that the water would just blow back and into the cab.
