Message:
i have a 98 dakota, and it first started fading this last fall. i thought i was just bad clear coat, cause it started on the roof up at the very front and at the very back. i got some body work done at a local shop (from an accident), and the shop says that its bad primer! cause lately its getting worse, it fades then peels! got it going on the edges of the bed, on the edges of the door/window areas and starting on the hood. i have a black dak so it terrible! anyone else haveing issues? im not the orginal owner bought it in 2001.

Yeah, I have this EXACT same thing happening. Apparently there is a $350.00 "help you feel better" that they will contribute to fix the problem the rest is all up to you.

I'm going through the same crap. I have a 98 reg. cab, and in the past year its got so bad it hurts to look at. If Dodge does give $350, that would at least help.

They still have this problem???? My 94 peeled like an orange and the zone rep said,, get this,, "You have too many miles on the paint!!" This was at 110,000. Told him my old 80 chevy never peeled with 217,000, go figure. This isn't making me feel better as I just bought a green 03 Dak today. My 94 was still peeling today when I traded it! A shame as it was a sharp looking truck otherwise! Zone rep kicked in $200 at the time to strip and paint the roof....Then the hood and other horizontal surfaces started to go.

Still haven't seen an answer to how to get the $350 "make you feel better about the lousy paint". I've talked to the dealer where I bought my 98 Dakota - he says he's not aware of any such thing? Help anyone?

I have a 98 Single Cab and I believe the color is referred to as "Amythest" no sure looks purple to me. Got a awesome deal cause of the color, well about a year ago it started doing the same thing, looks like the clear coat turning into cocaine. My once great looking truck looks like a UV test disaster. I've researched and never found a rebate or a recall on the bad paint problem, but it has occurred to several dodge owners from the years of 94-98. Seems to be before they joined with Daimler. Info on a recall would be nice as I don't want to fork out a grand or so to get the whole truck painted.

I am looking at buying a used Dakota. If the paint is still good on a 98 should I be safe? Will all 98's have their paint go bad?

I too have clearcoat failure on my truck. It is gradually getting worse, kinda looks like my truck has skin cancer. I am not impressed with my truck for this simple reason, (yeah of course its going to have its problems with the motor and accessories) but there is no reason that my 1998 Dakota sport should look the way it does right now. I contacted my dodge and they were willing to paint the truck (they would pay half, but only on the body panels that had the failure.) This means they wouldnt touch the fenders, which had a orange peel look to it, I predicted those would be next to look terrible. As of now, my truck will look like this for a long time, I do not have the finances to fix this problem. Amazing how a $19,000 truck is worthless by the time it hits 4-5 years old.

Well I got lucky with mine, its a 98 I bought at an auction in 99 for 8,000$ and now that its 5 years old I guess its not to much of a problem to me since I'm at the point I'm ready to get rid of it, its a shame I would keep it if the paint wasn't going. Anyone want a 98 Amythest V6 5 speed manual 2wd single cab with 65K miles and a spear set of upgrade model alloy rims for 5,500$?

So let me get this straight...you are getting rid of a truck that you feel was a good deal when purchased , and has been a good running truck , but because the paint is bad you are going to sell it???

Better be careful , there are more trucks out there that look good but run like sh!t!!!

Yep, I bought it when it had 15K miles on it I've done all the required maint. as per schedule, nothing has ever broke on it, other than a wheel bearing I had to replace. All fluids have been changed as per maint. Schedule., Its never been hit, car fax was clean when I bought it and still is. I just need more room than a single cab, the paint is going, and I want more than a V-6. I found a King cab R/T I want but you know car dealer the highest they will give on a trade in is 2K. So Udumbfuk those are the reasons I want to sell it not just because of the paint. Baby seats don't fit to well in the center with both you and your wife riding along as well, I can't shift gears.

Well I've been to several dealers and I haven't found one yet that would be that nice. Where the heck are you at? Seems every place I go is just out to make a buck I'm military so I've been to a lot of dealerships in different states and yet to find any dealer nice enough to fix a problem that is all Dodge's fault.
