Kotas,
I hear a thud at the end of braking and when I intially accelerate. I was wondering if anyone solved the problem before I go to the shaddiest dealership in the world "DODGE CHRYSLER MOPROBLEM sorry mopar" I have had this problem for the last 3 months or so... It seems like its getting worst. I saw this post and I noticed that I was the same as mine... I think mine is the same except I'm pretty sure my steering wheel locks...

Hi. I do not know if I have the same problem as you. But I have a 1998 and my truck makes a thud when I make a right or left turn. Sometimes it does it when I brake. The truck has been to the dealership 5 times. With no luck fixing it. I am trying a new dealership to see if it can be fixed. The dealership has replaced most of my ft end with no luck.I was told that there was a recall on dodge ft ends. But it is on the durango only? Do Durango and Dakotas have the same ft ends? I think so. But the dealer said no. The recall was on the durango only.So the dealer would not replace the part. Thank you Dodge. When you find out what is wrong with your truck can you let me know.

Popping Sensation/Noise In Steering Column While Turning

Popping Sensation/Noise In Steering Column While Turning

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves repositioning the steering column on the steering column mounting brackets.

MODELS:
1997 - 2000 (AN) Dakota
1998 - 2000 (DN) Durango

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
A popping sensation/noise can be felt and/or heard in the steering column during sharp turns (parking lot maneuvers).

DIAGNOSIS:
Start the engine. Rotate the steering wheel to the extreme right and then to the extreme left while monitoring for a popping noise or sensation. If a popping noise or sensation can be heard and/or felt in the steering column while turning, perform the Repair Procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

Start the engine.
Rotate the steering wheel so that the steering wheel is in an upside down position then remove the ignition key to lock the steering wheel in this position.
Remove the three screws that secure the lower edge of the steering column opening cover to the lower instrument panel reinforcement.
Using a trim stick or another suitable wide-bladed tool, gently pry the upper edge of the steering column opening cover. Pry just below the cluster bezel on each side of the steering column away from the instrument panel far enough to disengage the snap clip retainers from the receptacles in the instrument panel.
Remove the steering column opening cover from the instrument panel.
Loosen the steering column attaching nuts.
Bounce the steering wheel lightly in a vertical motion to normalize the alignment.
Without influencing the new location of the steering column, tighten the passenger side rearward nut to 12 N.m (105 in. lbs.).
Next, tighten the front driver side nut to 12 N.m (105 in. lbs.).
Tighten the remaining steering column attaching nuts to 12 N.m (105 in. lbs.).
Tighten the upper intermediate shaft attachment bolt to 57 N.m (42 ft. lbs.).
Position the steering column opening cover to the instrument panel.
Align the snap clip retainers on the steering column opening cover with the receptacles in the instrument panel.
Press firmly on the steering column opening cover over the snap clip locations until each of the snap clips is fully engaged in its receptacle.
Install and tighten the three screws that secure the lower edge of the steering column opening cover to the lower instrument panel reinforcement. Tighten the screws to 2.2 N.m (20 in. lbs.).
Start the engine then, rotate the steering wheel back to its normal position.

I known that this may sound dumb but try and grease your front drive shaft (if you have 4wd). I had this same noise when stopping and starting and then for some reason after I greased the front drive shaft it went away and I have never heard it since. I do know that the ring that holds the grease was about empty before I started, also. If this doesn't help you then I am sorry that I couldn't help. Just thought to have you look at something simple before it could turn into something big.

I am having a clicking noise in my steering wheel and I can feel it as well. If the vehicle is idling I can fell it when I turn the steering wheel quickly left and right. I also feel it when I hit a bump. Any suggestions I know Dodge will charge me an arm and a leg.

I Have a 2001 Quad Cab with 34,000 miles.
I just took my truck in for a clunking in the
front end, and also complained that the alignment
was off. I have had it aligned 3 times, and it
drifts out after about 3 months.

They replaced both lower control arms under
warranty (bad lower ball joints), and aligned
the truck as part of that.

Also I found a TSB for 2001 trucks related
to the position of the steering box.

Here is the TSB on this problem. The dealers seem to be ignorant to it.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Start the engine.

11. Tighten the rear passenger side nut to 25 Nm (225 in. lbs.).

12. Position the steering column opening cover to the instrument panel.

13. Align the snap clip retainers on the steering column opening cover with the receptacles in the instrument panel.

14. Press firmly on the steering column opening cover over the snap clip locations until each of the snap clips is fully engaged in its receptacle.

15. Install and tighten the three screws that secure the lower edge of the steering column opening cover to the lower instrument panel reinforcement. Tighten the screws to 2.2 Nm (20 in. lbs.).

16. Start the engine then, rotate the steering wheel back to its normal position.


POLICY: Reimbursable within the provisions of the warranty.

I think Papa Smurf may be on to something there. I have the same thud. When I stop and when I accelerate. Not when turning. If you have a pop when turning, check tie rod ends and ball joints. I've checked everything else in the front end except the drive shaft. I'll do that this weekend.

I almost can bet that the problem with the popping when turning problem is either the crappy rack and pinion steering or if the popping is in the cab it's your back right cab mount. There is a fix for this if any of you guys go by speedtweeks.net and look at the quick fixes area. I did a body lift and the popping in the cab went away completely.

Wouldn't want any other!

I have the same freaking problem. My front end noise is the loudest if the wheel is cut and you hit the gas (like getting out of a parking space)

I just picked up the truck from the dealership last night and it still does the same thing - everything is tight and i performed the TSB on the steering column myself to no avail.

Hey guys i have the same popping/knocking noise when turning.Like in a paking lot or something like that.I happen to look under the truck last wed. and found the rack and pinoin was leaking.I took it dodge about 2 months ago and they said it was the upper control arms.And that didnt fix my problem at all.I took it back the next day and the gut was a ass and didnt want to help.But now its being fixed and i will let everyone know if it helps my problem.If not i guess i will be fixing the front shocks,those are leaking too.Funny thing is,i went off road 3 times in my 95 taurus and nothing broke.And i do it in a dodge dakota and the rack and pinoin go out and the fron shocks start leaking.Sounds a little odd to me.And all four wheels didnt even go off road just 2 at a time because it was a dip on the side of the road.Anyway i will let everyone know if its fixed.

Well i got my truck back yesterday and its still making the same knock noise.So i guess i will be puting new front shocks on here soon.It only makes the noise when i stop or sometimes when i take off.But it use to do it when i would turn too,so i guess it was the rack and pinoin and the shocks.

If it's not in your steering colums and you hear it at a sharp slow turn, Are you talking about 4WD's? Do you have a locker in your front end that is engaging and disengaging as the wheels turn at a different rate?

this is for those of you who hear this noise when you stop or start to accelerate.this noise mayalso ocure when breaking and turning at the same time,also on rough roads the problem is in the steering column it is the slide joint that connects the lower shaft to the upper shaft.this joint has seized , you must remove both shafts and free up this joint lubricate then reinstall

Well i was driving around today and the same knocking noise was there and keep geting worse so when i got home i looked under the truck and the rack n pinoin is leaking again.So i am going back to dodge today and i hope it gets fixed right.

I purchased a 2003 dodge ram 4wd quad cab 1 ton diesel in November and last week began having TERRIBLE noise and vibration when slowing down and also squeeking and grinding sounds. I took it to the dealer and they added a lubricant to the rear end. It got much worse and I called the dealer to tell them they better get the truck in before we have to tow it!! Well, they had to replace the drive shaft!! This was two days ago and now there is a leakage between the engine and the drive shaft!! There was also a warning beep signal when driving on the interstate which didn't show what the problem was. Any comments or suggestions? HELP!! The dealer wants to sell me an extended warranty - but, what determines if this is a real defect with this first time designed 1 ton quad (NOT dually)

Well i took it in to the dealership the other day and they replaced the intermidiate shaft.And that still didnt help my problem.So i took it back again today and my problem was fixed after taking it 4 times.The problem was in the front brakes this is what the paper says they gave me.Found aftermarket pads rubbing grooves in knuckle.Rotated front pads and lubricated caliphers.Can anyone tell me what the knuckle is?Thanks

The knuckle, from my understanding, is the large iron/steel piece that your front wheel bearings are pressed into. When you remove your front tire, you will see the rotor on the wheel studs: all of that is the knuckle assembly. The front rotor is held in place by how you tighten your wheel, so be very certain to use the star pattern, or you can misalign your rotot. Your brake caliper is bolted directly to your steering knuckle from the back. also, this knuckle is held in place by the ball joints that attach it to the lower and upper a-arms/control arms: at the front of the knuckle is where your steering mechanism is attached to the wheel area.

I have been staring at this area of my truck for the past week and I am a bit frustrated right now. I am installing a 3" Fabtech lift kit. I am hoping MY 'thud' is gone when all of this is over, as my 97 2wd Dak also went 'thud' when I put the brakes on firmly. To do the lift kit I have to remove the upper a/control arms and replace them. At the same time [because I am anal about things] I pulled the lower a/control arms off the frame as well. I'll pick them up tomorrow, as I had new bushings pressed in [truck has 119,000 miles] and the ball joints drilled out so I can add new ball joints. In the process, I broke the sway-bar link, so those are on order. Hopefully, once all of this is done, I won't have any more 'thud' from the front end.

However, I was really frustrated over the brake issue. Like JoesDak, my brake caliper wasn't retracting under pressure, and my inside left brake pad no longer existed. The brake pad backing plate was there, but there wasn't a shred of material on it: and I had MANY deep grooves in the rotor. So, when all of this is finished I will also be beginning with new pads and a greased up caliper.

In my defense, I've only had the truck about 1200 miles of its life, and I've spent most of my previous repair time replacing all the under-hood stuff [can you believe it had the original spark plugs, with a gap of .08 instead of the factory spec of .04?]. The only things left to do to my front end to make it new is to replace the tie rod ends and the bushings on the sway bar. Hopefully it won't come to that.
